Syria dismisses OPCW’s decision as politicized, Foreign Ministry says

Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said that the Syrian Arab Republic expresses regret over the decision of the Executive Council of the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on Syria.

The report, the ministry said in a statement, was put to the vote in a departure from the OPCW rules, which clearly reflects the divisions between the Council’s member states.

The ministry added that the Syrian Arab Republic is disappointed over the OPCW departure from the technical nature of its work and the worsening state of politicization and polarization among its members, which will reflect negatively on the future work of the organization, and emphasizes that the consequences will affect the countries that have worked to use this organization as a tool to achieve political goals.

The statement said that Syria rejects the accusations in the decision submitted by Spain and considers it biased and reflects the views of a group of countries only, especially that it did not allow another important group of countries to express their point of view to make the text of the resolution balanced.

On the other hand, the statement said, the Syrian Arab Republic thanks and appreciates the countries that have pushed hard for an agreement within the Council and were keen to amend the text of the resolution to make it consistent with the convention’s provisions, mainly those countries which voted in a historic stance against this decision, as well as countries which abstained from voting.

The ministry concluded its statement by saying that the Syrian Arab Republic will study the decision carefully and will issue later its final position on how to deal with it according to the provisions of the convention.
