At least 25 dead, several buildings collapse in Indonesia earthquake (local time: 05:03, Depth 10 km)

At least 25 people have been killed and several buildings have collapsed in Indonesia's Aceh province due to a 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern region of Sumatra early Wednesday, local media reported.

The earthquake occurred at dawn with an epicenter of 19 kilometers southeast of the town of Sigli, about 100 km east of Banda Aceh, and was at a depth of about 8.2 km, according to the United States Geological Survey, which records seismic activity around the world.

Initially the USGS registered the earthquake at 6.4-magnitude on the Richter scale, with its hypocenter at a depth of some 17 km.

The most affected area is the district of Pidie Jaya and the head of the local disaster management agency, Puteh Manaf, said there were dozens of people still trapped under the rubble.

"The death toll could increase because data is still being entered from a few districts," he told news portal Acehkita.

A police official told epa it was the worst earthquake he had ever seen.

The tremor, which lasted for about three minutes, led to the collapse of several buildings, including a boarding school in Tamalanla where several students were trapped under the ruins, an epa photographer said.

Local hospitals were fully occupied with injured victims, while emergency response teams are still working to extract people trapped under the rubble, he added.

The National Search and Rescue Agency, Basarnas, said in a statement that electric poles and buildings including supermarkets, houses and mosques also collapsed, and that it planned to deploy a helicopter to assist the search and rescue efforts.
