23 still missing after avalanche engulfed ski resort hotel in central Italy

A total of 23 people were still missing Saturday among the ruins of a mountainside ski resort hotel that was buried by an avalanche in central Italy, according to the latest assessment released by the regional government of Pescara.

Government sources confirmed to EFE that 23 missing persons were on their records, but the number could go up.

The list of victims of Wednesday's avalance, that was triggered by a series of four earthquakes, "is not definitive and can vary," the government said.

  • The number of people rescued alive after the avalanche was so far 11: nine rescued from inside the ruins including four children, and two other men who managed to leave the avalanche to raise the alarm.

Rescue workers found four more survivors on Saturday in the rubble of the hotel .
