Central Italy shaken by three quakes in one hour

Three earthquakes with magnitudes above 5 on the Richter scale struck central Italy within an hour on Wednesday morning, with tremors felt in from Rome to Florence to Naples, Italian daily La Reppublica reports.

No damage was reported in the immediate aftermath of the quakes, but the mayor of one town told reporters that he feared buildings already weakened by heavy snow would collapse.

The first quake had a magnitude of 5.3 and a depth of 10 kilometers, while the second measured 5.6, according to estimates by Italy's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

Rome's underground Metro service to L'Aquila was suspended, local media said.

Wednesday's earthquakes occurred in the same area as tremors in August 2016 that killed 299 people.
