The United States has deployed a high-tech radar to monitor for potential North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test launches, a US defense official said on Wednesday.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the nuclear-capable hermit nation was in the final stages of test-launching an intercontinental ballistic missile.
The country carried out two nuclear tests and numerous missile launches in 2016 in pursuit of its oft-stated goal of developing a weapons system capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead.
An official speaking on condition of anonymity said the sea-based X-band radar (SBX) left Hawaii on Monday and would reach its intended destination some 2,000 miles (3,218 kilometers) northwest of the Pacific island near the end of January, Reuters reported.
