France strengthens security in Paris region after St. Petersburg explosion

France on Monday has been reinforcing security in Paris and surrounding areas after an explosion rocked a metro tunnel in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, the French Interior Ministry said.

"Following the events in the St. Petersburg metro, and as a precautionary measure, Interior Minister Matthias Fekl has decided to redeploy security means in public transport across the Ile-de-France region," the ministry said in a statement.

"In a context of an extremely high terrorism menace, the government continues to take measures to protect the French people," it added.

Earlier on Monday, blasts hit two subway stations in the Russian city of St. Petersburg. At least 11 people have been killed and 50 others injured, according to Russian media.
