Spain to have veto rights on Gibraltar issues after Brexit takes UK out of EU

The European Union announced on Friday that no agreement between its 27 remaining members and the departing United Kingdom are to apply to the tiny disputed territory of Gibraltar without prior agreement between Spain and the UK.

While setting out the EU's guidelines for the upcoming two-year Brexit negotiations, European Council President Donald Tusk clarified the bloc's position on the territory's future after it is obliged to leave the union alongside the UK.

"After the United Kingdom leaves the Union, no agreement between the EU and the UK may apply to the territory of Gibraltar without the agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the UK," according to the negotiation guidelines draft unveiled in Brussels.

Spain's Foreign Affairs Minister, Alfonso Dastis, on Wednesday, left no doubt what his government's strategy would be once the UK has left the EU.

Spain will not accept any "resolutions that may damage" its claim on Gibraltar or affect "in a severe and disproportionate manner" Spain's economic interests.
