The UK government called the US strike "an appropriate response to the barbaric chemical weapons attack"

The UK government called the US strike "an appropriate response to the barbaric chemical weapons attack".

The Pentagon said the Russian military, which supports Syrian government forces, had been informed ahead of the US action.

In a statement it said missiles fired from Navy destroyers USS Porter and USS Ross had targeted aircraft, aircraft shelters, storage areas, ammunition supply bunkers, air defence systems, and radars at Shayrat airfield in western Homs province.

The Pentagon added that the strike was intended "to deter the regime from using chemical weapons again".

The command of the Syrian Armed Forces has described the US missile strike on the military airfield in Homs an outright aggression. A statement broadcast by the Al Ekhbariya TV channel says that six military servicemen had been killed and there are wounded as well.
"The US aggression is a violation of all international norms and an attempt to weaken the combat capability of the Syrian army in the fight against terrorist groups," the document said. "Our response to this attack will be the determination to crush terrorists on Syrian soil wherever they are," the Syrian armed forces command said.
