EU Allocates $1.7Mln to Back Investigation Into War Crimes in Syria

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini
According to EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, the European Union remained committed to support of the Syrian people and conflict resolution process.

"The European Union announced it will provide €1.5 million to support the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in Syria," the press release said.

"Justice for the victims is key for an effective and inclusive reconciliation process in Syria. This is why those responsible for war crimes need to be held accountable and as soon as possible… The Syrians deserve peace and justice, and we continue to be at their side in this endeavour," Mogherini was quoted as saying in the press release.

The UN established the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism on international crimes committed in Syria on December 21, 2016.
