Iraqi VP: Baghdad Opposes Foreign, Including US, Military Bases

US Military Bases
Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki announced that Baghdad is against foreign military bases on the country's territory, including those of the US.

"We do not want a military bases in al-Waleed, the Iraqi society is against foreign bases on the country’s territory … I told the US side it was not in its interests to return to Iraq to establish military bases again," Maliki told RIA Novosti.

Iraq does not have a clear picture of the strategy of US President Donald Trump’s administration in the Middle East, Washington says it is not fully ready, Iraqi Vice President said.

"I still do not have a clear picture regarding the strategy of the Trump administration in the Middle East... They said it was not fully ready," Maliki added.

However, the administration of US President Donald Trump is more serious about fighting terrorism than that of his predecessor Barack Obama, the official said, adding that "the Trump administration is more serious about pursuing terrorists and groups. In this aspect, the new administration differs from the previous one, it has a hardline attitude against terrorism".

A top US commander Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend, who heads the anti-ISIL coalition, has announced that Washington plans to maintain a military footprint in Iraq even after the full eradication of ISIL (ISIS or Daesh) group.

The gereral claimed that "the Iraqi government has expressed an interest in having the US forces and the coalition forces remain after the defeat of ISIS."

"Our government is equally interested in that as are several coalition governments," he said, adding that the United States and some of its allies were “interested” to keep their military presence in the Arab country after the eventual defeat of the Takfiri terrorist group.
