South Korea’s National Security Council held an urgent meeting early Saturday to "review the defense posture" after the North fired off a barrage of missiles, a presidential spokesman said.
Short-rage ballistic missiles were fired off from the eastern coast. The US Pacific Command said it had detected three launches, two of which failed in flight, while a third one appeared to have blown up almost immediately.
Yoon Young-chan, a senior secretary of President Moon Jae-in, said his national security adviser and other officials "decided to proceed more thoroughly with the ongoing UFG drills," according to the Yonhap news agency.
South Korean troops have been conducting this week an annual joint exercise with US forces, codenamed Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG). Pyongyang has repeatedly slammed the drills as a preparation for an invasion.
The South Korean outlet cited a report carried by the North’s state agency KCNA, saying North Korean troops held an exercise on Saturday that simulated an incursion into its southern areas. The war games were inspected by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
