North Korea: Tremor detected in sign of possible nuclear test (local time: 12:00)

Tremor detected in sign of possible nuclear test
A large earth tremor has been detected in North Korea, raising speculation that the country has carried out its sixth nuclear test.

US seismologists said the 5.6 magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of 10km (six miles).

South Korea immediately convened a national security council meeting.

The tremor comes hours after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was pictured with what state media said was a new type of hydrogen bomb.

State media said the device could be loaded on to a ballistic missile. Neither claim could be independently verified.

  • North Korea has developed a hydrogen bomb that can be installed on an intercontinental ballistic missile, state media said Sunday.

State-run KCNA published a report claiming that leader Kim Jong-un had overseen an H-bomb being "loaded into a new ICBM", "guiding the work for nuclear weaponization", accompanied by a photo purporting to show Kim inspecting the bomb alongside nuclear scientists and senior party officials.

Kim expressed his "pride of indomitably bolstering up the nuclear forces", as well as his "great satisfaction over the fact that (North Korean) scientists do anything without fail if the party is determined", according to KCNA.

The report pointed out that Kim was intimately involved in the process, "acquainting himself with technical specifications and structural and operational characters of the H-bomb".

It added that the scientists had "upgraded (the bomb's) technical performance (...) on the basis of precious successes made in the first H-bomb test".

In January 2016, North Korea claimed to have carried out an underground test of a hydrogen bomb.

While observers agreed some sort of nuclear detonation did occur, they said that the explosion was not nearly large enough to be caused by an H-bomb.

Pyongyang has carried out multiple weapons tests this year, including the launch of two ICBMs in July, followed by the launch of a shorter range missile which flew over Japan last week, triggering alerts on the northern island of Hokkaido.

  2. An earthquake measuring 6.3 magnitude has struck North Korea near a known nuclear test site, Punggye-ri, suggesting that Pyongyang may have conducted its sixth nuclear test, Yonhap reports.
An allegedly artificial quake was detected at 12:36pm in North Hamgyeong Province, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Yonhap reports.

"Today, at around 12:36pm, we detected an artificial earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude... we are analyzing whether a nuclear test was conducted," South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, according to Yonhap.

The USGS reported the tremor as a 6.3 magnitude, while China's earthquake administration also said it detected a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in northeastern North Korea, calling it a "suspected explosion," Reuters reported.

The Pentagon and the JCS have urgently called for a crisis countermeasure, assuming that North Korea is most likely to have conducted a sixth nuclear test, the report added.

Seoul's presidential office has already accused its neighbor of conducting a nuclear test while president Moon Jae-in has convened a National Security Council meeting.
