Device found near German Christmas market full of nails

Device found near German Christmas market full of nails
In Germany, Police in the city of Potsdam are investigating a device filled with nails found next to a Christmas market.

The device was sent to a pharmacy in the city south-west of Berlin.  Police said it had no detonator.

The country is on high alert after an Islamist attack on a Festive Market in Berlin last year, in which 12 people died.

Police cordoned off the Christmas market  and the surrounding area and sent in special forces after being alerted about a suspicious object delivered to the pharmacy.

Police were alerted around 2.30pm (1.30pm Irish time) after a worker opened the package and saw suspicious wires and electronics inside.

Christmas markets opened across Germany this week at the start of the holiday season, fortified with security staff and concrete barriers to protect shoppers.

Germany has some 2,600 such markets.
