Israeli army deploys reinforcements in West Bank after Trump's speech

The Israeli army on Thursday deployed several battalions in the Palestinian West Bank in anticipation of possible violence after the official recognition by the United States president of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A military spokeswoman told EFE that after analyzing the general situation, the army decided that a number of battalions will reinforce areas of the West Bank, along with intelligence and territorial defense combat units.

"The American decision represents a declaration of war, an aggression against our people and our sanctuaries," Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh said.

Haniyeh called for a third intifada (uprising) against the Israeli occupation at a press conference in Gaza, warning Donald Trump that Trump would regret his decision.

In the West Bank, tension increased around midday with marches in various cities towards Israeli military checkpoints.

In Ramallah, about 3,000 people gathered in al-Manara Square and, after official speeches, they headed towards an army checkpoint to the north of the city while chanting slogans about marching towards Jerusalem.

At the army checkpoint, hundreds of young people, many with their faces covered with Keffiyehs (the Palestinian scarf), threw stones at the soldiers and burned tires.
