US F-22 fires flares to ‘warn’ Russian jets in Syria : Part of the Syrian airspace belongs to the US

US F-22 fires flares to ‘warn’ Russian jets in Syria
An F-22 fighter fired flares to warn Russian planes away from a “deconfliction line” in Syria, US military officials claim.

The incident took place Wednesday, when two Russian Su-25 close air support jets entered a “deconfliction area” east of the Euphrates river, a US military official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Two US F-22 fighters warned the Russian jets off, firing flares, the source added.

After the encounter, the Russian planes reportedly left the area. The incident also involved at least one Russian Su-35 fighter jet, CNN reported, citing an unidentified US military official.

  1. US fighter planes fired warning flares after Russian jets entered an agreed non-conflict area over Syria, the US defence department says.
The two Russian Su-25s flew east of the Euphrates River and into US-designated air space on Wednesday, the Pentagon said.
One of the US F-22 jets was nearly involved in a mid-air collision with a Russian plane, according to the US.
However, the Russian defence ministry has denied the US account.
In a statement it said the two Su-25s had been escorting a humanitarian convoy near a town beside the Euphrates when they were approached by the two F-22 jets.
At the weekend Russian official Igor Konashenkov said he was bewildered the US had staked a claim over part of Syria's air space and accused the US-led coalition of "operating in Syria illegally".

  2. A Su-35 fighter jet, which provided cover for the Russian planes, “rapidly approached” the F-22 from the rear and the US warplane left the area afterward, the ministry added.

The ministry stressed that the incident occurred above the western bank of the Euphrates River, dismissing media reports that the Russian planes were allegedly operating over the eastern bank.

  3. Though a verbal agreement last month indicated "that the Russians would remain west of the Euphrates River," according to Pahon, Russian jets have flown into coalition airspace in Syria "on the east side of the river six to eight times per day."
