Turkey to implement Manbij model in Syria, says FM
Turkey will implement the Manbij model in other parts of Syria, especially in the east of Euphrates River, Turkey’s foreign minister said on Friday.

In a news conference following a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Mevlut Cavusoglu said he discussed a previously agreed-upon roadmap on Syria with newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"We will implement the Manbij model in other parts of Syria, especially in the east of Euphrates [River] after approval of this roadmap. Thus, we will have taken a step together on an issue that causes tension in bilateral relations."

Cavusoglu said that the foreign ministers had a conversation on approving a roadmap that would lead to the implementation of the Manbij model.

Turkey's top diplomat refers to the Manbij model as Turkey's initiative to remove terrorists groups YPG/PKK from the region with the cooperation of the U.S.

  1. Turkey and the United States have agreed to approve a road map on Syria “to avoid potential confrontation” between the two allies, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said after meeting with the new U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Brussels on the occasion of a NATO summit.

“In our meeting we confirmed approval of a roadmap on which our joint working group has reached an initial agreement,” Çavuşoğlu told reporters after his meeting with Pompeo.

“We will implement the Manbij model in other parts of Syria, particularly east of the Euphrates. We’ll therefore be taking a step with the U.S. on an issue that causes tension in our bilateral ties. If the roadmap is implemented, the [Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units] YPG will be withdrawn from Manbij. Otherwise we’ll have to intervene against the terrorists just like we did in Afrin,” he said.

The meeting between the two took place less than 24 hours after Pompeo’s nomination as secretary of state was confirmed at Congress. Pompeo visited Ankara in February 2017 in his capacity as CIA director.

“If this roadmap is implemented ... the YPG will be withdrawn from Manbij and a transparent process will be carried out for the security and governance of the city,” Çavuşoğlu said.

    1. The Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, Heather Nauert, stated on Friday that her country had no agreement with Turkey regarding the alleged withdrawal of the Kurdish-led YPG forces from the northeast Aleppo town of Manbij.

“The Secretary and Foreign Minister agreed on the value of U.S.-Turkish partnership in the region and of maintaining close communication. Secretary Pompeo conveyed the Administration’s concern for U.S citizens and Mission Turkey local staff detained in Turkey. Building upon prior discussions on Manbij, the two reaffirmed their support for the established bilateral process to find a common way forward,” Nauert stated.
