Iraq summons Turkish ambassador after cross-border strike kills 2 Iraqi commanders

  1. Iraq cancelled on Tuesday the Turkish defence minister’s visit to the country which was scheduled for Thursday, Iraq’s foreign ministry said in a statement.


    The ministry also summoned the Turkish ambassador to hand him “a strong protest note and inform him of Iraq’s confirmed rejection of his country’s attacks and violations”, the statement added.

    A Turkish drone strike on Tuesday in the Sidakan area in northeastern Iraq, near the Turkish and Iranian borders, killed two members of Iraq’s border guard and the driver of the vehicle they were in, the Iraqi military said.

    Earlier on Tuesday the Iraqi government condemned a Turkish drone strike in the country's province of Erbil that killed two Iraqi soldiers, slamming "repeated military violations" by Ankara as a "dangerous violation of Iraqi sovereignty, international law and the UN Charter".

    Iraq cancelled a 13 August visit by the Turkish Defence Minister, Hulusi Akar, to the country, following condemnation of a Turkish drone strike in the Erbil province that killed two Iraqi border guards, according to an Iraqi Foreign Ministry statement.

    The Turkish ambassador in Iraq has been summoned to Baghdad after the Turkish drone attack.

    "We are announcing the cancellation of the visit by the Turkish defense minister to Iraq, scheduled for Thursday. The Foreign Ministry will summon the Turkish ambassador and hand him a note of protest in connection with the attack", the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said.

    Earlier on Tuesday, Baghdad reported that at least two servicemen had been killed in a drone strike against a military vehicle in the Sidekan area. According to the Al-Sumaria TV channel, five Iraqi servicemen were killed, along with ten members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Iraq condemned the attack, denouncing "repeated military violations" by Turkey as "dangerous violation of Iraqi sovereignty, international law and the UN Charter". (sputnik)
