Syria’s air defences ‘intercept barrage of Israeli missiles’ | Al Jazeera

Syria’s air defences

Syrian air defences have intercepted Israeli missiles over the western province of Hama, Syrian state TV said early on Friday, citing a military statement.

The “barrage of missiles” were directed from the north of the Lebanese city of Tripoli at 12:40am (22:40 GMT) on Friday, the statement said, describing the attack as an “Israeli aggression”. The rockets were aimed at the town of Masyaf in the Hama countryside, the military said.

“Our air defenses intercepted the missiles and downed most of them,” it added.

The official SANA news agency reported explosions in Masyaf.

There was no immediate comment from Israel.

Shortly before the raids, Israeli warplanes were heard flying over neighbouring Lebanon, with some residents of Beirut reporting seeing missiles in the skies over the city.

Israel regularly violates Lebanese airspace and has launched hundreds of raids in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011. The attacks have hit government troops, allied Iranian forces and fighters from the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

  1. Soon after the strikes on Syria, videos purporting to show Israeli warplanes flying low over Beirut, Lebanon also surfaced on social media. Though the IDF has not confirmed Friday's strikes, Israeli operations have previously been conducted from Lebanese airspace.

    1. On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to deliver a “crushing blow” to “whoever tries to harm us,” singling out both Iran and Syria by name.

“We will continue to act against attempts by Iran and its proxies to establish military bases in Syria. We will not compromise on this issue,” Netanyahu said, echoing Tel Aviv’s long-held position that it reserves the right to strike 'Iranian targets' regardless of where they are located.

  2. Israeli missile strikes on Syria killed at least six Iran-backed fighters Friday, a war monitor said.

The dead were all foreign paramilitaries fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assad's forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Right said.

The missiles, which were fired from Lebanese airspace, hit positions held by militias in the Masyaf district of Hama province, Observatory chief Rami Abdul Rahman said.

One also targeted a government-run research centre, where surface-to-surface missiles are developed and stored, the Britain-based watchdog said.

The Israeli military said it would not comment on reports in foreign media.

The research centre in Masyaf has been hit several times by Israeli strikes in recent years, the Observatory said.
