The Chinese Embassy has warned the Australian government is “bound to bring further damage to bilateral relations” by scrapping Victoria’s Belt and Road agreement with Beijing.
The federal government used sweeping new veto laws to cancel Victoria's Belt and Road agreement with China last night on the grounds the deal is inconsistent with Australia’s foreign policy.
The state's controversial Belt and Road initiative involves a large-scale network of Chinese-funded infrastructure projects stretching from Asia to Europe.
The Chinese Embassy released a statement in response to the decision and labelled the move “unreasonable” and “provocative”. “It further shows that the Australian Government has no sincerity in improving China-Australia relations. It is bound to bring further damage to bilateral relations and will only end up hurting itself”.
