Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press briefing when asked to comment on U.S. accusations that China engages in "coercive diplomacy" and "economic and military coercion."
Noting Alexander George, a professor at Stanford University, first put forward in 1971 the concept of "coercive diplomacy" to summarize the U.S. policy toward Laos, Cuba and Vietnam at that time, Wang said the United States has demonstrated to the world what coercive diplomacy is through its actions.
"That is, to achieve its strategic goals through the threat of force, political isolation, economic sanctions and technological blockades," the spokesperson added.
"From the perspective of the threat of force, the classic cases of 'coercive actions' by the United States have caused war and human tragedy," Wang said, adding that the U.S. government is not shy about using the term "coercive diplomacy."
"In terms of political isolation and economic sanctions, the United States has been wielding the 'big stick of sanctions' against Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran and Venezuela for years," Wang said.
The previous U.S. administration provoked a "trade war" with many countries, Wang said, adding that U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan wrote that the previous U.S. administration's policy toward Iran "is all coercion and no diplomacy."
In terms of technological blockades, Wang said the United States, in a bid to retain its monopoly in science and technology, ignores the principles of market competition and international economic and trade rules, abuses national security excuses to arbitrarily suppress high-tech enterprises in other countries, and coerces other countries into taking joint actions.
"Whether France's Alstom, Japan's Toshiba and Toyota, the Soviet Union's aerospace industry, or China's Huawei, all of them are vivid examples," Wang added.
Pointing out that the United States deliberately exerts pressure on China, illegally arrests Chinese citizens, suppresses Chinese enterprises for no reason, wantonly interferes in China's internal affairs and coerces and induces other countries to form an anti-China clique, Wang said China is a victim of "coercive diplomacy," not a perpetrator.
"No matter who engages in 'coercive diplomacy,' we are firmly opposed to it," Wang added.
Noting China follows an independent foreign policy of peace, Wang said aggression and hegemony are never in the genes of the Chinese nation.
He said China follows the path of peaceful development and rejects the claim by some that a stronger China is bound to follow the beaten path to seek hegemony.
"Unlike the United States, we have never threatened other countries by force, never engaged in military alliances, never exported ideology, never stirred up trouble on others' doorsteps, never extended our reach into others' homes, never initiated a trade war, and never attacked other countries' enterprises for no reason," Wang said.
"China will, of course, take reasonable and lawful countermeasures to uphold international fairness and justice when its sovereignty and national dignity are threatened or infringed upon," said the spokesperson.
"We will work with all peace-loving countries to oppose all forms of coercion in the world," Wang added.
