Israel declares state of emergency in Lod as riots shake Jewish-Arab city - The Jerusalem Post

Fierce rioting continued throughout Tuesday night in the mixed Jewish-Arab city of Lod and a state of emergency was declared, with Defense Minister Benny Gantz announcing the deployment of several Border Police units to help quell the violence that saw the burning of three synagogues and dozens of cars.

At least two people were in serious condition from the clashes, one from rocks. In Acco, another mixed Arab-Jewish city in northern Israel, an 84-yer-old man was seriously hurt when a restaurant was set on fire by rioters. Close to 20 residents of Ramle and Lod were arrested on Tuesday night, KAN reported.

  1. Violence in mixed Jewish-Arab towns in Israel flared early on Wednesday amid growing anger within the country's Arab minority over Israeli air strikes on Gaza and police raids on Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of emergency in Lod, near Tel Aviv, after reports emerged on Tuesday of Arabs setting fire to a synagogue and Jews stoning a car that was being driven by an Arab resident.

"We have lost control of the city and the streets," Lod Mayor Yair Revivo lamented to Israel's Channel 12 News. Garbage bins, knocked over and set ablaze, could be seen nearby.

Security officials said they had reassigned 16 border police companies to Lod from the occupied West Bank to deal with the violence.

Israel's Arab minority - Palestinian by heritage, Israeli by citizenship - is mostly descended from the Palestinians who lived under Ottoman and then British colonial rule before staying in Israel after the country’s 1948 creation.

Most are bilingual in Arabic and Hebrew, and feel a sense of kinship with their fellow Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

And they often complain of systemic discrimination, as well as unfair access to housing, healthcare, and education services.

Police arrested dozens of people overnight in Lod as well as in majority-Arab towns in central and northern Israel, including Umm al-Fahm along the West Bank border and Jisr al-Zarqa along the Mediterranean coast.

  2. The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the radical Hamas movement that controls the Gaza Strip, said early on Wednesday it had launched 100 rockets towards the Israeli city of Beersheba, Palestine’s Dunya Al Watan news portal reported.

The attack came in response to Israel’s air strikes on residential houses in the Gaza Strip, it said.

Meanwhile, a massive missile strike from Gaza targeted one of Tel Aviv districts early on Wednesday, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene.

According to the report, numerous blasts were heard in the sky. Air raid sirens continue to wail in the city.

  3. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised speech on Tuesday evening that Hamas militants would pay a ‘heavy price’ for their rocket attacks on the Jewish state’s territory.

"The Israeli Defense Force struck hundreds of terrorist targets," he said. "We have killed dozens of terrorists, including high-ranking commanders. We bombed headquarters, destroyed buildings and towers. We continue to strike with our full might. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have already paid and will continue to pay a heavy price for their attack."

Meanwhile, Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, said the Israeli military had struck over 500 targets in the Gaza Strip and destroyed dozens of radicals.

  4. An Israeli air strike has reportedly leveled another major high-rise in the Gaza Strip – the second in the span of 24 hours – as a barrage of Palestinian rocket fire continues to rain down on Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities.

Footage from the embattled Palestinian enclave purported to show the al-Jawhara Tower as it took a direct hit by an Israeli war plane early on Wednesday morning, sending a massive column of smoke into the night sky. It is at least the second large structure in Gaza City severely damaged in recent air raids, with the Hanandi Tower, reportedly a residential complex, reduced to rubble on Tuesday night.
