Iranian president says his country does not trust US gov't's promises - China.org.cn

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday that his country does not trust the promises made by the U.S. government, while noting that he seeks effective interaction with all the countries of the world.

"We don't trust the promises made by the U.S. government," Raisi said at the General Debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which kicked off Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York.

"Today, the whole world including the Americans themselves have admitted that the project of countering the Iranian people, which manifested itself in the form of violating the JCPOA (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, referring to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal) and was followed by the 'maximum pressure' and arbitrary withdrawal from an internationally recognized agreement, has totally failed," said Raisi.

Noting that the policy of "maximum oppression" is still on, the Iranian president said that "we want nothing more than what is rightfully ours. We demand the implementation of international rules."

"All parties must stay true to the nuclear deal and the UN Resolution in practice," he added.

"Fifteen reports released by the IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency) have attested to the adherence of Iran to its commitments," he said. "However, the U.S. has not yet discharged its obligation, which is lifting sanctions. It has encroached upon the agreement, withdrawn from it and levied even more sanctions on my people."

"The United States mistakenly believed it would render us desperate and devastated, but our perseverance has yielded results and will always do, for the smart and dynamic resistance of the Islamic Republic of Iran comes from our strategic rationality," said the Iranian president.

"While decisively defending all its rights and the interests of its people, Iran is keen to have large-scale political and economic cooperation and convergence with the rest of the world," said Raisi.

"I seek effective interaction with all the countries of the world especially with our neighbors and shake their hands warmly," he added.

  1. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi condemned US “hegemony” in the Middle East, saying efforts to dominate the region had been a disastrous failure while blasting its “criminal” sanctions on medical supplies during a speech to the UN.

In a pre-recorded speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Raisi outlined major grievances with Washington while laying out a vision for his own country’s foreign policy, arguing that the world had rejected the US’ failed “hegemonic system.” To underscore the point, he cited two major events this year which he said symbolized that failure.

“This year, two scenes made history: One was on January 6, when the US Congress was attacked by the people, and two, when the people of Afghanistan were dropped from US planes,” Raisi said, referring to Afghans who fell to their deaths after desperately clinging onto the side of a departing US military plane during a hasty pull-out operation last month.

From the Capitol to Kabul, one clear message was sent to the world: The United States’ hegemonic system has no credibility, whether inside or outside the country.

  2. In his speech to the high-level General Debate at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi called for an end to United States sanctions against his country, describing them as a method of waging war.

Mr. Raisi described the presence of the United States in the Middle East region as a “lack of rationality”, which has been detrimental to “oppressed people, from Palestine and Syria to Yemen and Afghanistan, as well as the US taxpayers”.

Sanctions against Iran, he continued, “are the U.S.’s new way of war with the nations of the world”, and a crime against humanity, especially sanctions on medicine, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
