Moscow lodges resolute protest to Poland over attack on Russian envoy

Moscow filed a resolute protest to Warsaw over an attack on Russian Ambassador Sergey Andreyev in Poland and the disrupted wreath-laying ceremony, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

"On May 9, extremists disrupted amid total inactivity of the police the wreath-laying ceremony at the cemetery of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw, using violence against Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergey Andreyev and other staff of the diplomatic mission," the statement says.

"A resolute protest was lodged to the Polish authorities for conniving with actually Neo-Nazi thugs," the ministry said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded that the Polish side "immediately arrange a wreath-laying ceremony, ensuring complete security against any provocations."

"We expect Poland to take the necessary measures as soon as today," the statement reads.

The Russian ambassador arrived at the military memorial cemetery of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw in a diplomatic car with the Russian flag. After he got out of the car, he was surrounded by an aggressive crowd that had earlier gathered at the memorial with Ukrainian flags, cloths poured over with red paint and anti-Russian slogans. There were no police in the square at the time. The diplomats made only several dozen steps when the crowd barred them from going farther into the cemetery.

For several minutes, the crowd shouted at the Russian diplomats and threw packages with red substance at them. After some time, the police pressed the crowd back and escorted the diplomats to their cars.

The crowd at the cemetery is shouting at other people arriving there that they allegedly have no right to give tribute to soldiers and celebrate Victory Day. They are demanding that police do not let people lay flowers.   [TASS]

  1. Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau called on Monday the attack on Russian Ambassador Sergey Andreev in Warsaw a "regrettable" incident.

Earlier on Monday, Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergey Andreev was doused with red paint while trying to lay a wreath at the cemetery of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw.

"The event that took place today during the laying of the wreath at the graves of the Soviet soldiers by the Russian ambassador is an incident that should not have happened, an incident worthy of regret," Rau said, as quoted by Polish news agency PAP.
