China will steadily push for reunification with Taiwan, Chinese leader Xi Jinping assured on Monday.
Addressing the closing meeting of the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress, he said, "We should steadily push for the reunification of the motherland."
Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled there after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War.
Since then, the island has preserved the flag and some other symbols of the Republic of China that had existed in mainland China before the Communists came to power. Beijing regards Taiwan as one of its provinces.
