Greece transfers around 500 migrants to a ferry after dramatic rescue operation

Greece’s coastguard on Thursday said nearly 500 asylum seekers rescued in a dramatic operation this week off the island of Crete had been temporarily transferred to a ferry for processing.

700 migrants begin disembarking on Greek island of Crete

Around 700 migrants aboard a freighter that had been drifting in the Aegean Sea for two days began disembarking on the Greek island of Crete on Nov. 27, local officials said.
The migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, include "a lot of women and children", said Theodosis Kalantzakis, the mayor of Ierapetra.

Pentagon: US merchant vessel Cape Ray starts destroying Syrian chemical weapons

The process of destruction of chemical weapons taken out of Syria kicked off on Monday on board the US merchant vessel Cape Ray, specially modified for such purposes, in the Mediterranean Sea, US Department of Defense spokesman Army Col. Steven Warren said Monday.

Warren said the destruction of warfare poisonous agents will take about 60 days. The exact terms will also depend on weather conditions, he said.

In his intervention on Syria at today’s EU Foreign Affairs Council, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos referred, at the outset, to the need for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution on confronting the humanitarian aspects of the crisis, as a human tragedy continues to unfold.

Mr. Venizelos then pointed to the need for an assessment of the impact of the crisis in Ukraine and in EU- and U.S.-Russian relations on the development of the Geneva II process and the mediation of Mr. Brahimi, with the aim of safeguarding the process.

Ship carrying 400 immigrants sends SOS near Greek island, rescue underway

Dozens of illegal immigrants were rescued Monday from a ship near the Greek island of Crete, while authorities were working to bring the vessel's over 300 other passengers to safety.

A total of 408 persons, mostly Syrians and including about 100 women and children, were aboard the 32-meter-long vessel when it sent out a distress signal.

The rescued immigrants have been transferred to a cargo vessel which first reached the area, along another Greek ship and a US warship from the nearby naval base on the island upon instructions of the Coast Guard.

Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Yiannis Maniatis and I, along with our associates, met so that we could all be equally up to date and have the same picture regarding the results of the very important seismic explorations carried out in previous months, regarding the analysis of the results of the seismic exploration, and, naturally, regarding the next steps that will lead to the selection of the concessionaires, precisely as has been done for other regions as well.

Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos’ statement after the completion of the exercise “Lefkos Aetos 2013” in Crete

The strong resolve of Greece to ensure peace, security and stability in the broader region was proven by the successful shot of the S-300 missiles in Crete, which took place for the first time. This was the concept of the statement made by the Minister of National Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos, who ensures the Greek people that the Armed Forces guarantee integrity, stability and peace.

Mr. Avramopoulos made special reference to the exceptional contribution made by our Cypriot brothers, offering the S-300 systems to Greece, so as to reinforce the interdiction mechanisms against any possible threat.

Ισχυρός σεισμός δυτικά από τα Χανιά 6.4M - Μετασεισμοί 3.4 - 4.1M / Quake of 6.4 magnitude detected west of Crete

Ισχυρή σεισμική δόνηση 6.4 Ρίχτερ σύμφωνο με το Ευρωμεσογειακό Ινστιτούτο σημειώθηκε στις 4:12 με επίκεντρο 64 χιλιόμετρα δυτικά από τα Χανιά.

Η σεισμική δόνηση ήταν μεγάλης διάρκειας και έγινε ιδιαίτερα αισθητή σε όλη τη νότια Ελλάδα.

Σύμφωνε με Κρητικά ΜΜΕ, ο σεισμός ήταν ιδιαίτερα μεγάλης διάρκειας και σημειώθηκε στη θαλάσσια περιοχή μεταξύ Καστελίου Κισσάμου και Αντικηθύρων.

Το εστιακό του βάθος ήταν 22,9 χιλιόμετρα σύμφωνα με το Γεωδυναμικό Ινστιτούτο του Εθνικού Αστεροσκοπείου Αθηνών και 47 χιλιόμετρα σύμφωνα με το  Ευρωμεσογειακό Ινστιτούτο.

Turkish gov’t points at “bargain” investment opportunities in Greece.

The Turkish Ministry of Economy has called for businessmen to invest in Greece, inviting to them to benefit from the “bargain” investment opportunities.

The ministry sent a written note to chambers across Turkey explaining the investment chances in its neighboring country, which is still struggling to recover from its economic crisis.

The note said the ministry had prepared a 300-project list of potential investment opportunities over a wide range of sectors including tourism, real estate, food and export fields. The investment cost of the listed projects starts from around 2 million euros, it added.

ΚΡΗΤΗ: 5,9 R δίνει το σεισμό το Γεωδυναμικό/M 6.0 - CRETE, GREECE - 2013-06-15 16:11:00 UTC/Μετασεισμοί (4.5-4.9Μ)

Ισχυρή σεισμική δόνηση μεγέθους 5,9 βαθμών της κλίμακας Ρίχτερ σημειώθηκε στις 19.11 στον θαλάσσιο χώρο νότια της Κρήτης. Σύμφωνα με επίσημη ανακοίνωση του Γεωδυναμικού Ινστιτούτου του Εθνικού Αστεροσκοπείου Αθηνών, ο σεισμός εντοπίζεται 84 χιλιόμετρα νότια νοτιοανατολικά από του Τυμπακίου Ηρακλείου, 143 νότια νοτιοδυτικά της Ιεράπετρας και 483 χιλιόμετρα νότια νοτιοανατολικά της Αθήνας. Το εστιακό βάθος υπολογίζεται στα 10 χιλιόμετρα.
