UN, 24 September 2014 – Inequality is one of the greatest threats to development and international security because it fosters poverty, exclusion and breeds social unrest, resentment and violence, said Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, among several leaders from the Latin America and the Caribbean region to address the General Assembly today.
“I come from Latin America, a region of middle-income countries that have their own dreams, challenges and tasks,” said Ms. Bachelet. “For us, sustainable development, security, quality of governance and above all, inequality and social cohesion are the most pressing challenges.”

Bolivia rechaza pretensiones de Chile de desconocer competencia de CIJ (la necesidad que tiene Bolivia de una salida al mar)

El dignatario boliviano, Evo Morales, rechazó que Chile desconozca la competencia de la Corte Internacional de Justicia (CIJ) de La Haya para solucionar el conflicto de territorio marítimo, las declaraciones fueron hechas ante la determinación de Chile de impugnar la demanda marítima de Bolivia ante ese organismo.

Al respecto, el Presidente recalcó la injusticia de Chile con la expansión de su territorio en el Océano Pacífico y reiteró la necesidad que tiene Bolivia de una salida al mar. "Después de tantas promesas fallidas, Bolivia acudió al principal órgano de justicia de las Naciones Unidas", dijo.

Strong aftershocks rock Chile as authorities assesses damage from earlier quake

SANTIAGO — A strong 7.8-magnitude aftershock and an earlier 6.4-magnitude rocked Chile’s northern coast today (April 3) even as Chilean authorities assessed the damage from a massive earthquake that struck off the northern coast on Tuesday.
There are no immediate reports of new damage or injuries from today’s aftershocks.

A strong 8.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off the northwestern coast of Chile...

A strong 8.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off the northwestern coast of Chile, killing at least two people and setting off a small tsunami that prompted evacuations along the country's Pacific coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake was centered about 100 kilometers northwest of Iquique Tuesday evening. It was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 6.2-magnitude.

Chilean authorities said waves measuring about two meters were striking cities along the coast. Officials quickly ordered evacuations, warning that larger waves are expected later.
