White House officials say they are monitoring student-led protests in Hong Kong closely after China this week warned of unimaginable consequences that could include using force to put down the demonstrations.
The demonstrations show no signs of letting up, presenting a dilemma for China's communist leaders who are deciding between cracking down on the protesters and facing international condemnation or risking seeing the pro-democracy fervor spread to the mainland.

Hong Kong protests an 'internal affair,' says China FM

Protests sweeping Hong Kong have nothing to do with the United States, the Chinese foreign minister said on Wednesday (Oct 1), brushing off renewed US calls for restraint and warning Beijing will not tolerate "illegal acts."
"The Chinese government has very firmly and clearly stated its position. Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told US Secretary of State John Kerry ahead of talks at the State Department.

 Οι φιλοδημοκρατικοί φοιτητές οι οποίοι συμμετέχουν στις διαδηλώσεις στο Χονγκ Κονγκ τόνισαν ότι θα εντείνουν τις κινητοποιήσεις τους εάν δεν παραιτηθεί ο κυβερνήτης της πόλης - κράτους, Λέουνγκ Τσουν Γινγκ, προχωρώντας ακόμη και σε καταλήψεις κυβερνητικών κτηρίων.

Ο εκ των ηγετικών στελεχών του φοιτητικού κινήματος Λέστερ Σουμ σημείωσε ότι οι διαδηλωτές θα μπορούσαν να προχωρήσουν σε τέτοια μέτρα εάν ο κ. Λέουνγκ δεν παραιτηθεί μέχρι την Πέμπτη.

Hong Kong Democracy Protesters Look for Outside Support

Pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong have been greeted mostly with silence by foreign governments, frustrating protest organizers.
Many countries in the region are not democracies, while others may be hesitant to release statements that would almost certainly draw the ire of Hong Kong's powerful overseer, the Chinese government.
"Once again, democratic govs are not speaking up for democracy" as it relayed the U.S. consulate's statement, which it described as "mealy-mouthed," the Twitter feed of Occupy Central lamented.

The central government Sunday condemned the illegal pro-democracy movement Occupy Central for undermining social stability in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) in response to the surprise launch of the protest that has brought chaos to the city's business district.

"The central government firmly opposes all kinds of illegal behavior in Hong Kong that undermines social order and stability. It is fully confident that the Hong Kong government can handle the situation in accordance with the law and resolutely supports such handling," a spokesperson for the State Council's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office said Sunday afternoon.

China urges U.S. to stop interference in Hong Kong affairs

China on Wednesday demanded the United States to stop issuing orders regarding the political reform of Hong Kong or doing anything to damage its prosperity and stability.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the comment when asked to respond to U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel's remarks about Hong Kong's political reform and universal suffrage in the chief executive election.

The Hong Kong Observatory has issued No. 8 storm signal, its third highest weather alert as Typhoon Utor approaches Hong Kong. Forecasters say the alert will remain in force for most of the day today.
Strong winds and heavy downpours lashed Hong Kong overnight. After ravaging through the Philippines and displacing thousands of residents, Typhoon Utor turned towards Hong Kong Wednesday morning.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued storm signal No. 8 early in the morning. This is the Observatory’s third highest alert level. According to the forecast, Utor will be closest to the city during the day, skirting around 250 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong.
