EU Ethos: Ex-commission chief cleared of violating EU rules by taking Goldman Sachs job

A European Union ethics panel cleared the former president of the European Commission of violations for taking a job with Goldman Sachs, though he was scolded by the panel for showing poor judgement when he accepted the position.

UK demands emergency talks after £1.7bn EU bill

EU finance ministers have agreed to emergency talks after British Prime Minister David Cameron challenged a demand from the EU for an extra £1.7 billion by December 1, because the UK economy has done better than other EU members since 1995.
Cameron interrupted a meeting of EU leaders to tell Jose Manuel Barroso, the head of the European Commission, that the demand for extra cash from the UK was unacceptable.
The Prime Minister emphasized that a lot of money was being demanded and that it was not just a problem of dealing with Euroskeptic sections of the British media and public.

EU's Barroso to Britain: Don't Alienate Your Friends in Europe

LONDON— European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso will on Monday issue a plea to Britain not to isolate itself in Europe by picking fights over immigration, saying that European Union membership boosts British international clout.

Britain's future in the 28-country trading bloc has been thrown into question by Prime Minister David Cameron, who has adopted an increasingly defiant stance on immigration to tackle the threat of the anti-EU UK Independence Party. UKIP's rising popularity threatens his bid for re-election in 2015.

BRUSSELS: European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso warned Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday (Oct 1) not to impose new trade measures against Kiev, saying it would threaten an agreement with Russia to delay a landmark EU-Ukraine pact.

"We have strong concerns about the recent adoption of a decree by the Russian government proposing new trade barriers between Russia and Ukraine," Barroso told Putin in a letter released by the Commission.

European Commission prefers to settle Putin-Barroso conversation issue diplomatically

BRUSSELS, September 03. /ITAR-TASS/. The European Commission prefers to settle the issue involving the contents of a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and EC chief Jose Manuel Barroso diplomatically, the EC press-service has told ITAR-TASS, when asked if Barroso had any objections to the possibility the Russian presidential staff may disclose the contents of the conversation in full to eliminate confusion.
The EC press-service said it was a major diplomatic issue and steps were being taken to settle it diplomatically, not through the mass media.

Russian presidential administration ready to make public Putin-Barroso conversation

MOSCOW, September 02. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s presidential administration has both the transcript and the audio recording of a recent phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and “is ready to make public its content to remove all misunderstandings”, Russia’s Ambassador to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said in a letter to Barroso.
“Over the past few days, some media, including the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, have been publishing comments regarding your phone conversation with President Putin last Friday, August 29,” the letter said.

BRUSSELS, August 30 (RIA Novosti) – European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Saturday it’s still not too late for a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine, but the point of no-return can come if the escalation of the conflict continues.
“We may see a situation where we reach the point of no return. If the escalation of the conflict continues, this point of no-return can come. I believe it’s still not yet too late to find a political solution,” Barroso said following the talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

EU's Barroso condemns Russian incursion in call with Putin. (Destabilisation of Ukraine and the region will carry high costs)

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso condemned "significant incursions" by Russian forces into Ukraine in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, the EU said.
"In a very frank exchange of views, the president of the Commission expressed his deep concern with the current events and the situation on the ground in Ukraine," the Commission said in a statement.
