US, Japan to update defense ties. (China on Wednesday expressed concerns...)

Japan and the United States agreed on Wednesday to map out how they will work together if Tokyo needs to use force to help protect a friendly country under attack, as they update defense cooperation guidelines for the first time in nearly two decades.

The development follows Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's historic step away from Japan's post-war pacifism in July, when the Japanese government reinterpreted the pacifistic Article 9 of the constitution to end a ban that has kept its military from fighting abroad.

UK announces 1.1 bln pounds in defense funding

UK Prime Minister David Cameron says the money will be used in areas such as surveillance aircraft and Special Forces.

"Well what we're saying today is because we've managed the economy prudently and because we've managed the defense budget carefully. There's no national economic plan without a national defense plan and that's what this government gives."

Cameron has made the announcement at the Farnborough International Airshow in southern England.

Japan's Cabinet OKs controversial resolution on collective self-defense (when there are "clear dangers")

The Japanese cabinet on Tuesday rubber-stamped a resolution that will allow the country to exercise collective self-defense right by reinterpreting the pacifist Constitution, despite strong criticism from the public and overseas.

The resolution, which is regarded as a major overhaul of Japan' s postwar security policy, sets three new conditions that would enable the exercise of the collective self-defense right, such as when there are "clear dangers" to the lives of its people and their rights due to armed attacks on Japan or "countries with close ties."
