Greek MPs ratify deal for sale of majority stake in Piraeus port to China's COSCO

Greek lawmakers ratified on Thursday with an overwhelming majority the landmark concession agreement with China's COSCO Shipping for the acquisition of a majority stake in Piraeus Port Authority (PPA or OLP in Greek).

Greek new gov't welcomes Chinese investment

In another positive sign that Greece's new government welcomes foreign investment, its Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is scheduled to pay a visit to Chinese-run Piraeus Contanier Terminal (PCT) in Piraeus Port on Friday, exactly one month after the new cabinet was sworn in and three days after the reform list of the government was approved by the Eurogroup.

China on Friday spoke highly of Greece's decision to respect existing deals with China's shipping conglomerate COSCO Group on Piraeus port.

According to reports, Greek Alternate Shipping Minister Theodoros Dritsas said the new government will respect all deals signed with COSCO .

Greece betrays principle of contract by halting port sale

As soon as he assumed office, new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced he is about to halt a landmark deal to privatize the country's biggest port of Piraeus. China's Cosco Group, a State-owned global shipping giant, had submitted a bid, but now, according to the new government, the sale will be reviewed.

Chinese premier concludes fruitful Europe tour

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang left here for home on Saturday, wrapping up a six-day trip to Britain and Greece that infused fresh vigor into China's ties and cooperation with the two countries and with Europe as a whole.

In Greece, Li met separately with Greek President Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Parliament Speaker Evangelos Vasileios Meimarakis. 

He also addressed the China-Greece Maritime Cooperation Forum, expounding China's views on maritime affairs.

Premier Li hails China-Greece cooperation on PCT project

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang applauded on Friday the success of the Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) project jointly operated by China and Greece, calling it a "pearl" in bilateral cooperation.

Li made the remarks while inspecting the project with his Greek counterpart, Antonis Samaras. China's state-owned shipping giant COSCO gained the management lease for No. 2 and No. 3 piers of the Piraeus port, the largest one in Greece, in 2008.

China, Greek PMs anticipate further win-win cooperation

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and his Greek counterpart Antonis Samaras on Thursday hailed the traditional friendship between their two countries and expected more win-win cooperation in the future.

At a joint press conference after their meeting, Premier Li appreciated the assistance offered by Greece to help Chinese nationals evacuate from violence-hit Libya in 2011, and expressed China's firm belief in Greece to tackle the difficulties brought by its debt crisis.

China is a responsible and long-term investor of Greek national bonds, Li noted, calling the Sino-Greek relations mutually beneficial.

Chinese premier arrives in Greece for visit

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Athens Thursday for an official visit, his first trip to Greece since taking office in 2013.

Li is scheduled to meet with top Greek leaders, including President Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Parliament Speaker Evangelos Vasileios Meimarakis.

During the visit, both countries are expected to sign more than 20 cooperation agreements and business contracts on trade, investment, finance, shipping, technology, culture and quality inspection, according to Chinese Ambassador to Greece Zou Xiaoli.
