Catalonia Independence Crisis Cost Spain €1B, FM Says

Spain's foreign minister claimed Monday that the Catalan independence crisis had cost the country "a billion" euros as fallout from the turmoil continued to hamper growth in the wealthy region.

Luis de Guindos said the slowdown in growth in Catalonia, which accounts to around a fifth of Spanish GDP, was hampering the Eurozone’s fourth largest economy as a whole.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on America and Europe to renew their commitment to shared security in light of the new threats the world is facing, in a speech delivered at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington on Monday (7 July) ahead of his meeting with president Barack Obama.

In his speech titled “A strong Transatlantic Bond For An Unpredictable World”, Mr. Fogh Rasmussen said that since World War Two, “the solution to every strategic challenge has been transatlantic” with, “America and Europe working together, trading together and when necessary fighting together.” “But we cannot take our transatlantic bond for granted. We must renew our commitment. And continue to invest time, energy, and resources, to keep it strong”, he added.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has urged Russia to reverse its course on Ukraine policy and to take steps towards rebuilding trust.
"Russia’s actions threaten the peace and security we have built after the fall of the Berlin Wall," Rasmussen said Wednesday in a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "And let me stress: nobody wants to return to the Europe of the Cold War. We cannot have new dividing lines across our continent."

Defense Chief Hagel Warns Against US Isolationism. -"A mistake to view our global responsibilities as a burden or charity."

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says it would be a mistake for the United States to turn to isolationism to avoid involvement in the world's conflicts.

After 13 years of U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hagel told a foreign affairs forum Tuesday in Chicago that Americans are increasingly skeptical of foreign military engagements.

But he said it would be "a mistake to view our global responsibilities as a burden or charity." He said failure to engage in world affairs would prove costly.
