Russian lawmakers angry Kiev declares pro-Nazi force creation date as national holiday

Many Russian legislators are deeply angered by Kiev’s decision to declare October 14, the day when the pro-Nazi Ukrainian Insurgent Army was created during World War II in 1942, as Defender of the Nation Day and a public holiday. The UIA gained notoriety as an active collaborator with the Nazi force of occupation and participant in many WW II massacres of civilian population. Members of both houses of the Russian parliament interpreted this move as Kiev’s official confirmation of its commitment to Nazi ideas.

Ahead of Ukraine elections, a generational split on nationalism

KIEV — More than two decades after the Soviet Union’s collapse gave birth to an independent Ukraine, a new generation is coming of age just as a separatist crisis is threatening to split this country in two.
Unlike their elders, however, younger people here have no memory of Soviet life, and most see themselves, despite their divided country, as Ukrainian.

That view will undergo one of its first tests Sunday when citizens go to the polls in a presidential election that could determine Ukraine’s future as a sovereign nation.

Spanish top court rules Catalonia referendum unconstitutional

Spain’s Constitutional Court has ruled that a referendum in Catalonia on independence from the rest of the country would violate the law, saying that regions within Spain “cannot unilaterally call a referendum on self-determination.”
According to a summary of the ruling, any “right to decide” their future by Catalans has to be in accordance with Spain's 1978 constitution, which stipulates Spanish unity.
The Constitutional Court ruled “unconstitutional and null” a declaration by the regional parliament in Barcelona which claimed that Catalonia has the right of self-determination

The fate of the region rests on the power struggle between Catalan President Artur Mas who had promised a referendum on independence from Spain on November 9 and the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy who insists that such a vote would be illegal.

Funding Ukraine's illegitimate regime outside US legal system. - Moscow, FM

The United States should think about the consequences of "financially pumping" radical elements in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "Apparently, the US administration will continue turning a blind eye to the dominance of ultra-national forces in Kiev, which are hunting those thinking differently throughout the country, enhance pressure on the Russian-speaking population and our fellow citizens, and threaten violence to Crimean residents for their aspiration of self-determination.

But those, who make decisions in the US, should think about the consequences of such reckless indulgence of radical elements of nationalistic shade in Ukraine and financial aid to them," the Russian Foreign Ministry said amid statements of Viktor Yanukovych on the intention of the US to provide Kiev with financial assistance.

Splintered Vote Throws Greek Politics Further Into Confusion ...

By RACHEL DONADIO
ATHENS — A day after Greece’s two dominant parties collapsed at the polls, the leader of the center-right New Democracy party announced Monday that he had failed to form a governing coalition, pushing the mandate to the second party amid growing uncertainty about Greece’s political stability and staying power inside the euro zone.

Not so ‘golden dawn’ for Greek parliament ...

Neo-fascist party Golden Dawn is set to enter the Greek Parliament. Exit polls in Sunday’s election show the extreme-nationalist organization has won about seven per cent of the vote – well above the required three-per-cent threshold.
This is the first time in nearly 40 years that a far-right party is projected to enter Greece’s parliament.
“A new nationalist movement dawns. Hundreds of thousands of Greeks have dynamically joined the national cause for a great, free Greece,”

Los nacionalismos contra la Unión ...

Felipe González Márquez  (EL PAÍS)
-
