According to the report, about 2,000 people in the West Sulawesi province were forced to flee their homes. The disaster destroyed more than 60 buildings, including the local governor's office and hotel building. The tremors have also caused several landslides.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a distance of 139 km north-west of the city of Paepare. The focus was located at a depth of 8 km.

Arianto, from the rescue agency in Mamuju city, told news agency AFP they were trying to reach those trapped. He did not specify a number.
