Tomislav Nikolić: Serbia, U.S. share common values

Serbia-US bilateral relations are developing excellently and we share common values, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has told US Vice President Joseph Biden.

Serbia has many friends around the world and it counts the US among them, Nikolic said at a meeting with Biden on Tuesday.

Nikolic noted Serbia's commitment to full EU membership and implementing reforms, the presidential press office said in a statement.

The opening of negotiation chapters 35 and 31 in the EU accession talks, Kosovo and aligning the foreign policy with the EU are questions that have arisen, he also noted.

"As president of Serbia, I would not be able to take part in the signing of an agreement that would imply an inter-state nature. On the other hand, we cannot impose sanctions on Russia if that is implied by the alignment with the EU foreign policy. We have ties with Russia, and we are also tied with the US, which has a large Serbian community. We were allies in two wars and we share two of the world's greatest scientists, Tesla and Pupin, and that is an important meeting point," the president concluded.

Speaking about regional relations, Nikolic said Serbia was firmly committed to peace and stability.

Bilateral relations with Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Montenegro and FYROM[*] are very good, he said, adding that Serbia supported the integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Bilateral relations with Croatia are mysterious, Nikolic said, noting that voices similar to those in WWII could be heard in the country.

Biden said the US had a strong interest in Serbia being politically and economically successful.

You have undertaken tough reforms that are already producing results and I congratulate you on what you have done, he said.

Washington is not expecting Serbia to choose between Russia and the US, he said.
