Addressing journalists in attendance, chief judge Mahmud Kamel al-Rashidi warned the media they should reserve judgment until they had read the massive 1,430 verdict in its entirety.
The former leader had been charged along with seven of his former police commanders for the death of 239 protesters – a fraction of the 850 people activists believe died in the unrest. Judge al-Rashidi said the charges had been politically motivated and did not deserve to be tried in his court. Mubarak's interior minister Habib el-Adly and six aides were also found not guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.
The court further found that neither Mubarak, his aides, nor his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, were guilty of corruption charges stemming from a controversial gas deal with Israel. Hussein Salem, a businessman and longtime confident of Mubarak, was similarly found not guilty after being tried in absentia.
The sweeping exoneration was met with cheers in the packed courtroom.
Despite the verdict however, Mubarak will not be immediately released from prison, as he is serving a 3-year sentence for embezzling public funds.
Mubarak was initially sentenced to life imprisonment for the deaths in 2012, along with his former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly. That sentence was later overturned by an appeals court on a technicality.
Upwards of 5,000 police officers had been deployed to provide security at the courthouse, though passions have waned since he was first deposed nearly 4 years ago. Anticipating any potential outbursts in the courtroom, prior to reading the verdict, the judge warned that anyone who disrupted the court could face a year in prison.
Saturday's verdict had initially been slated for September 27, but Judge al-Rashidi postponed it, saying he had not had ample time to write out his reasoning in light of the thousands of case filed presented during the retrial........................http://rt.com/news/209955-mubarak-trial-verdict-egypt/

L’ex-raïs de 86 ans a par ailleurs été acquitté samedi d’accusations de corruption qui pesaient contre lui dans un autre dossier. Il devrait cependant rester en détention car il purge actuellement une peine de prison de trois ans dans le cadre d’un autre affaire de corruption.
Après l’annonce du verdict par le juge Mahmoud Kamel al-Rashidi, la joie a éclaté dans la salle du tribunal et les deux fils de Moubarak, eux aussi accusés de corruption, ont embrassé sur le front l’ancien président, qui s’est contenté pour sa part d’un sourire discret. "Le procureur général a décidé de faire appel" de la décision du tribunal du Caire qui a blanchi samedi M. Moubarak, a indiqué le parquet dans un communiqué. L'ancien président était jugé pour son rôle dans la répression des manifestations monstres de janvier-février 2011 ayant mis fin à ses trente années au pouvoir, et au cours desquelles plus de 846 personnes ont été tuées.

ReplyDeleteA group of around 300 people gathered in front of the army vehicles and barbed wire that is blocking off the entrance to the iconic square, while a smaller group of around 50 people gathered a few metres away at the Egyptian Museum, according to an Ahram reporter at the scene.

A court in Egypt has overturned the convictions for embezzlement of former President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons and ordered a retrial....
ReplyDeleteMr Mubarak was jailed for three years in May after being found guilty of fraudulently billing the government for $14m (£9.3m) of personal expenses.
But the Court of Cassation found legal procedures were not followed properly.
Mr Mubarak's lawyer told the BBC the 86-year-old would soon be released from detention at a Cairo military hospital.

ReplyDeleteAprès avoir annulé sa condamnation à trois ans de prison, la justice égyptienne a ordonné mardi 13 janvier la tenue d'un nouveau procès de l'ancien président Hosni Moubarak, dans une affaire de détournement de fonds. Une étape qui pourrait constituer l'un des derniers pas avant sa possible libération.
Moubarak, détenu dans un hôpital militaire du Caire, avait été condamné en mai à trois années d'emprisonnement pour corruption. Il avait détourné des fonds qui avaient été employés à la rénovation d'une résidence de famille.
Selon des sources judiciaires, un nouveau procès dans cette affaire pourrait permettre à Hosni Moubarak, 86 ans, de retrouver la liberté si la première condamnation n'est pas confirmée. Pour l'heure, il n'a pas été précisé s'il demeurerait en détention pendant le nouveau procès.
En novembre, un tribunal avait déjà abandonné en appel les accusations de meurtre de centaines de manifestants qui lui avaient valu la prison à vie en première instance. L'ex-Raïs restait cependant en détention dans un hôpital militaire du Caire dans le cadre de son procès pour corruption.
Moubarak avait démissionné en février 2011 à l'issue d'une révolte populaire après 30 années au pouvoir.
