Croatian parliament adopts decision to exit border arbitration with Slovenia (by 141 -0 in favor of withdrawing)

Croatian parliament on Wednesday adopts a decision to withdraw the border arbitration with Slovenia.

At an extraordinary session, the lawmakers by 141-0 voted in favor of withdrawing from the arbitration following revelations of a Slovenian judge on the international panel had tried to lobby other judges.

In an explanation sent to parliament ahead of the session, Croatian government said that it believes the Arbitral Tribunal is not in a position to fulfill its duty as is expected from an independent and professional international court.

On last Wednesday, Zagreb-based daily newspaper Vecernji list published transcripts and audio tapes revealing Slovenian representative on the arbitral tribunal Jernej Sekolec and Slovenian Foreign Ministry employee Simona Drenik had discussed lobbying other judges in the tribunal to influence the outcome of the arbitration in Slovenia's favor.

Croatia and Slovenia signed an arbitration agreement on the borders on Nov. 4, 2009, which entered into force on Nov. 29, 2010.
