Russia needs guarantee for humanitarian pause in Syria

Russia and the Syrian government are ready to resume the "humanitarian pause" in air strikes in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo if international organizations provide a guarantee for the evacuation of civilians, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

"Six humanitarian corridors are open around the clock, hot food and first-aid are provided for the civilians leaving the eastern districts of Aleppo," Igor Konashenkov said.

He also said that the Russian aviation and the Syrian Air Force have been observing a moratorium on flights over Aleppo for eight days.

The "humanitarian pause" in Aleppo was introduced on Oct. 20 and lasted three days.

  • During that time, militants and civilians could leave the eastern part of the city, but the terrorists refused to leave and threatened the civilians with death.

Aleppo, Syria's most populous city before the five-year-old civil war erupted, is now divided into government- and rebel-held eastern areas.
