Russian Foreign Ministry: OPCW decision on Syria politicized, disappointed and may cause complications

The Russian Foreign Ministry warned against the repercussions of the politicized decision of the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on Syria as disappointing, and may cause complications.

Director of the Foreign Ministry Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Mikhail Ulyanov said in a statement on Saturday that the performance of the OPCW, which plays no more than a technical role, became politicized, stressing that the decision adopted against Syria will not serve improving the work of the organization and may cause a number of complications.

Last month, the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry affirmed that the latest accusations against Syria which were included in the report of joint inquiry of the UN and Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW), formed according to Security council resolution No.2235, were not based on any tangible evidence and they didn’t reflect any objectivity or accuracy in their conclusions.

The Syrian Arab republic has repeatedly denied all allegations circulated by some western departments and their tools about the use of chemical poisonous materials by Syrian sides, like chlorine gas, during military acts which take place between the Syrian Arab armed forces and the terrorist groups, the Ministry said in a statement about a report by the joint international inquiry mechanism.

The Russian diplomat said that those, who attempted to make the organization which issued this decision as a tool to achieve their geopolitical goals, are holding responsible for the repercussions of such decision.

He described the decision as disappointed and passive.

On Friday, Russian Defense Ministry asked the OPCW to consider sending its experts to Aleppo’s ‘1070’ area as soon as possible on a mission to establish the facts of the use of chemical agents as weapons.
