May says election call was to strengthen Brexit position

British Prime Minister Theresa May has said she called for a snap general election to strengthen Britain's position during Brexit negotiations.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Mrs May said Britain needs clarity and stability going beyond Brexit.

She said the British government would have been coming up to the most crucial part of negotiations to leave the European Union in two years' time when it would be facing a general election.

Mrs May said the opposition and the Scottish National Party threatened to vote against the deal, saying she  feels it is important that the country is united.

She added that she took the decision to call for a general election reluctantly.

Asked if she will now spell out her Brexit prospectus or does she want people to vote for a blank cheque, she said her manifesto will be a manifesto to take the country forward, building a stronger Britain.

She said her government will be ensuring that it negotiates the best possible deal with the EU, ensuring Britain has control of its borders, laws and money.

She also reiterated that there will be no second referendum on Brexit.

MPs are to vote in the House of Commons later today to approve the plan for a snap election.............http://www.rte.ie/news/2017/0419/868576-uk-politics/
