Helicopter carrying Iran president in hard landing

A helicopter carrying the Iranian president has been involved in an accident, state media is reporting.

State media says President Ebrahim Raisi was on board a helicopter that experienced a hard landing on Sunday.

It was also said to be carrying Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian.

The Interior Minister said rescuers were still trying to reach the site due to the difficult weather conditions.

    Speaking to state TV by telephone, Vahidi said the president was returning to Tehran after inaugurating the Qiz-Qalasi dam at the common border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.

    The president and his entourage were on board a number of helicopters when one of the choppers was forced to make a hard landing due to poor weather conditions in the region, he said.

    The interior minister noted that the rescue teams have been deployed to the area, adding that foggy weather and the difficult terrain in the area may take them longer to reach the accident scene.

    Vahidi said contacts have been made with the president’s entourage, but the complicated geographical conditions have hampered communication.

    More than twenty fully-equipped search and rescue teams, including drones and sniffer dogs, have been dispatched to the area.

    The Iranian Armed Forces have also deployed commando units and Special Forces to assist in the search operation.
