2. Πότε θα ξυπνήσει το ρήγμα της Ανατολίας;

  4. Strong 6.3 quake in Japan, but no major damage reported....

TOKYO — A strong earthquake shook Japan on Saturday near the southwestern city of Kobe, leaving 22 people injured, seven of them seriously — mostly elderly tripping while trying to flee, police said. No one was killed.

The magnitude 6.3 quake left some homes with rooftop tiles broken and cracked walls, while goods fell off store shelves, according to the Meteorological Agency and Japanese TV news footage.

The agency had earlier said the magnitude was 6, but later upgraded it.

The quake was centered on Awaji Island, just south of Kobe, at a depth of 15 kilometers (9 miles).

The quake was in the area where a magnitude 7.2 quake killed more than 6,400 people in 1995.

TV news footage showed that some areas on the island had liquefied, a common effect of strong earthquakes. Japan is among the most quake-prone nations in the world. In March 2011, northeastern Japan was struck with a giant quake and tsunami.

The agency warned there may be aftershocks for about a week.

  10. Third Turkish bridge connecting Europe to Asia....Name of new bridge was announced as ''Yavuz Sultan Selim'' by Turkish President Gul....

Groundbreaking ceremony for the third bridge in Istanbul was held on Wednesday with the attendance of Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.and Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek.

The ceremony was held on the 560th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul, doubled the significance of the day.

Likewise, the bridge is to be completed on May 29, 2015, as Erdogan said at the ceremony, which will be the 562nd anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul.

President Gul announced the name of the new bridge as ''Yavuz Sultan Selim'' and said "The first bridge was named after Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey and the first President. The second one was named after Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, who presented us with Istanbul, while at the same time being honoured to reach the praise of Prophet Muhammad about the conquest of Istanbul. Now, the third bridge is named after Sultan Yavuz Selim. We hope the bridge will be completed on time allowing us to reach Asia from Europe and Europe from Asia."

The first bridge in Istanbul is widely known as "The Bosphorus Bridge" which was completed in 1973 spanning the Bosphorus strait.

Fatih Sultan Mehmet is the second bridge, completed in 1988 and named after the 15th century Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror who conquered Istanbul and brought an end to the control of the Byzantine Empire.

The third one, as announced on Wednesday, will be called "Yavuz Sultan Selim'', who was a Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century and the first Ottoman sultan taking the title of "Caliph of Islam".

  16. Destruction of İstanbul's green spaces poses major quake-related risk....

İstanbul has long anticipated a potentially devastating earthquake, which the city has been preparing for -- at least on paper -- since the Aug. 17 Marmara earthquake of 1999 in which tens of thousands died in an indelible national trauma.

In the 14 years since the Marmara earthquake -- which cost the lives of some 40,000 according to unofficial figures -- ongoing work to create quake-resistant cities has come under fire from city planners, engineers, environmental groups and safety experts. Part of the plan is to renew the city's housing stock, replacing old and crumbling buildings with new construction. Civil society groups say this has been going on very slowly and that if the anticipated earthquake were to occur today, the loss of life would be too high, in spite of the 14 years the city has had to prepare since the Marmara earthquake. Professional unions and chambers also say these renewal projects are often developed and organized with the main concern of profiting municipal officials and their friends, rather than constructing better-planned buildings. In addition to sturdier construction, earthquake preparedness efforts include educating residents and improving disaster response systems, efforts in which İstanbul has so far failed badly -- and failed in favor of construction business profiteering.

When a powerful quake hits the city, with thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands injured, lost, trapped under the rubble in need of immediate rescue or medical attention, İstanbul will need open spaces for the survivors to gather where authorities will be able to help those in need, distribute supplies and minimize further losses from aftershocks as people will be outside buildings. Gathering in open spaces is a fundamental part of post-quake disaster management. But İstanbul, thanks to the influence of contractors and the local government and relevant ministries' cooperation with these individuals in issuing zoning permits, has lost its designated spaces for large crowds to meet.

Head of the Chamber of Engineers İstanbul Branch Cemal Gökçe told journalists during a press conference last week that 470 such spaces had been designated for post-earthquake convening. However, all of these spots are now taken up by shopping malls, skyscrapers and luxury buildings. Gökçe said currently, realistically, there are no places to put up tents for people to get by in a disaster situation. “All the places that were unoccupied in the year 1999 have since been included in zoning plans.”.....http://www.todayszaman.com//news-323641-destruction-of-istanbuls-green-spaces-poses-major-quake-related-risk.html

  18. Fifteen years ago this week, after a cataclysmic earthquake took about 18,000 lives in Turkey, geologists and Turkey's emergency authority are claiming that Istanbul is still not "completely ready" for a future big quake – something which experts say could happen at any moment....

On August 17, 1999 a magnitude 7.4 quake hit the industrialized town of Izmit in western Turkey. Istanbul – 80 km east of Izmit – was also badly affected by the quake, the deadliest in Turkey in 60 years. Around 1,000 people were killed in buildings unable to withstand the enormous forces generated.

"No one can say a big-scale quake will not happen today or tomorrow," one geologist at ITU Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences, Okan Tuysuz, told Anadolu Agency. "We predict a minimum magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale at any time," adds Naci Gorur, a geologist at Istanbul Technical University.

Almost 70 percent of buildings in Istanbul are still at risk and 27 percent of them are at 'high risk' – and must be demolished immediately – according to data from the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning.

The government launched building projects in Istanbul and across Turkey in 2012 to renew structures which are not quake resistant. "The most important project launched after the August 17 quake has been urban transformation," geologist Tuysuz says.

"Strengthening works at buildings, schools and bridges are important works to resist quakes," he said but Tuysuz claims these projects are not sufficient and that most of the transformation works are aimed at generating "unearned income."

"Some transformation process is being carried out slowly in some risky regions but it is being carried out fast in some regions, which are not at risk and [where] unearned income is high."

Gorur holds similar ideas: "Yes, there are some works but they are not enough, comprehensive [or] transparent."

"The public's security of life should be a priority, not building luxury buildings. Instead of constructing many luxury buildings, secure buildings for everyone could have been built," he says.

Districts which are close to coast are at higher risk compared to the other areas across the Marmara region, geologists say. "Offshore districts are expected to be less affected by a possible quake," Tuysuz says.......................................http://www.aa.com.tr/en/news/371823--earthquakes-still-threaten-istanbul
