Al Jazeera's Jacqui Rowland, reporting from Paris, said Gueant, who is being questioned by police, is a former chief of staff to Sarkozy and a close ally of the former president.
Our correspondent said the questioning on Friday was related to a deposit of more than $540,000 that entered Gueant's bank account in March 2008.
"The allegations that ... [police] are looking into is the possibility that this money was in fact coming from the former Libyan leader, Colonel [Muammar] Gaddafi, as part of financial contributions to the election campaign in 2007 of the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy," she said.
Sarkozy is currently the leader of the opposition UMP right-wing party.

ReplyDeleteΟ πρώην υπουργός Εσωτερικών της κυβέρνησης του Νικολά Σαρκοζί, ο Κλοντ Γκεάν, τέθηκε υπό κράτηση σήμερα στο πλαίσιο της έρευνας για τις καταγγελίες ότι η προεκλογική εκστρατεία του πρώην προέδρου το 2007 χρηματοδοτήθηκε από τη Λιβύη, δήλωσαν συγκλίνουσες πηγές. Σε αυτή την υπόθεση οι δικαστές ερευνούν την κατάθεση σε έναν λογαριασμό του Γκεάν 500.000 ευρώ, κάτι που ανακαλύφθηκε το 2013.
Ο Γκεάν, που υπήρξε επί δέκα χρόνια το δεξί χέρι του Σαρκοζί, δικαιολόγησε την ύπαρξη του ποσού αυτού λέγοντας ότι τα χρήματα προήλθαν από την πώληση σε έναν Μαλαισιανό δικηγόρο δύο πινάκων του 17ου αιώνα του Φλαμανδού ζωγράφου Άντρις φαν Έρτφελτ. Όμως ειδικοί αμφισβητούν ότι τα έργα αυτά έχουν τόσο μεγάλη αξία. Ο πρώην υπουργός, που έχει διατελέσει και γενικός γραμματέας στο προεδρικό μέγαρο, τέθηκε υπό κράτηση νωρίς σήμερα, επεσήμαναν δικαστικές πηγές.

ReplyDeleteL'ancien ministre de l'Intérieur de Nicolas Sarkozy, Claude Guéant, a été placé en garde à vue vendredi matin dans l'enquête sur les accusations de financement libyen de la campagne présidentielle de M. Sarkozy en 2007, ont indiqué des sources concordantes, confirmant une information de lexpress.fr.
Dans cette affaire, des juges d'instruction du pôle financier de Paris s'interrogent notamment sur la découverte en 2013 d'un virement de 500 000 euros sur le compte de Claude Guéant, qui fut pendant 10 ans le bras droit de Nicolas Sarkozy.
Claude Guéant avait justifié ce virement par la vente à un avocat malaisien de deux tableaux d'un peintre flamand du XVIIe, Andries van Eertvelt. Mais des experts ont contesté la valorisation de ces œuvres.
