FM: Japan's attempt to draw in third party is in vain/(Senkaku/Diaoyu issue)

China says it opposes any infringement of its sovereignty by Japanese aircraft or vessels and remains vigilant against such activities made by Japan. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to a question about warning shots allegedly proposed by Japan at Chinese planes patrolling the Diaoyu islands.
Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, said, "Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islets are China’s inherent territory. Patrols conducted by Chinese planes and ships in waters off the islands represent normal administrative activities for the purpose of exercising jurisdiction. China opposes any infringement on its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands committed by Japanese aircraft or vessels and remains vigilant against attempts to commit such acts.”

Asked about a recent conversation held between Japanese and US defense officials, the spokesman said China has always advocated solving territorial disputes through negotiations. He said any attempts by Japan to draw in a third party to confront China over the Diaoyu Islands issue will be in vain.

  1. US, Japan hold joint military drill...........

US Marines and Japan’s Self-Defence Force have begun a joint landing drill in the west coast of the United States.

The drill, which takes place in California, focuses on island defense, and comprises 280 Japanese troops and about 500 U.S. Marines. It is also the first time Japan’s Self-Defense Force has used Osprey aircraft in a military drill.

12 Ospreys were deployed at a US base in Okinawa last October, drawing strong opposition from local residents. The joint military drill is set to run through Friday.

  2. Chinese official urges caution to U.S. on Diaoyu Islands issue...

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi on Friday urged the U.S. to correctly understand the Diaoyu Islands issue and be cautious with words and deeds.

Yang stressed at a meeting with visiting U.S. senators John McCain and Sheldon Whitehouse that China has indisputable sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and their affiliated islets, according to a Foreign Ministry press release.

McCain said that the United States does not take a position on the sovereignty of the islands, said the press release.

According to a Kyodo report, McCain on Wednesday described the islands as "Japanese territory" and said China is violating Japan's fundamental right to the islands at a news conference in Tokyo.

Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesman Hong Lei on Thursday urged "relevant U.S. lawmakers" to stop making irresponsible remarks on the islands, saying that it is futile for anyone to deny the fact that the islands are Chinese territory.
