The United States on Tuesday urged Europe to take "proactive action" against Lebanon's Hezbollah after Bulgaria linked the group with a July 2012 blast in the country.
In a written statement, John Brennan, the White House counterterrorism advisor for President Barack Obama, called on Europe to take "proactive action" to target Hezbollah's infrastructure, financing and operational networks.
The statement came after the Bulgarian government said earlier in the day that two individuals with links to the Lebanese militant group were involved in the bombing at the Burgas Airport, which killed five Israeli tourists, their Bulgarian driver and the suicide bomber.
Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said that the two suspects, with Canadian and Australian passports, had been living in Lebanon since 2006 and 2010, respectively.
"Bulgaria's investigation exposes Hezbollah for what it is -- a terrorist group that is willing to recklessly attack innocent men, women, and children, and that poses a real and growing threat not only to Europe, but to the rest of the world," stated Brennan, Obama's nominee for CIA director.
Brennan commended the Bulgarian government for its professional and comprehensive investigation into the attack, vowing to continue to help the Eastern European country bring the perpetrators to justice.
On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also pressed Europe to draw "the necessary conclusions about the true nature of Hezbollah."
