HONG KONG: Former US intelligence technician Edward Snowden is en route from Hong Kong to Moscow heading to a third destination, the South China Morning Post reported Sunday.

"US whistleblower Edward Snowden has left Hong Kong on an Aeroflot flight to Moscow, credible sources have confirmed to the South China Morning Post," the newspaper, which has carried exclusive interviews with Snowden in Hong Kong, said in a brief report on its website.

"Moscow will not be his final destination," it said, raising the possibility of Iceland or Ecuador as Snowden's final destination.

  • NSA leaker Snowden on flight to ‘third country’ via Moscow

US whistleblower Edward Snowden is en route to Moscow from Hong Kong on an Aeroflot flight, Hong Kong authorities have confirmed. The US filed an extradition order for Snowden alleging espionage, theft and conversion of government property.
A spokesperson from the Hong Kong government confirmed that Edward Snowden had "legally and voluntarily" left the country.
“Mr. Edward Snowden left Hong Kong today (June 23) on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel,” said the Hong Kong government in a press release. The statement also said the documents for Snowden’s extradition submitted by Washington “did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law.”

“As the HKSAR Government has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for a provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr. Snowden from leaving Hong Kong.”

The only Aeroflot flight that arrives from Hong Kong into Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport today is at 17:05 local time (13:05 GMT).

Moscow will not be Snowden’s final destination, he could potentially fly on to Ecuador or Iceland where he has allegedly applied for asylum. A diplomatic source told the Russian news agency Itar-Tass that no request for asylum in Russia had been received from the former CIA employee.

  1. Hong Kong says NSA leaker Edward Snowden has left for a "third country"....

Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who exposed secrets about the federal government’s surveillance programs, has reportedly has left for a "third country."

The South China Morning Post reported Sunday that Edward Snowden was on a plane for Moscow, but that Russia was not his final destination. Snowden has talked of seeking asylum in Iceland.

Hong Kong said in a statement that it allowed Snowden to leave despite an extradition request from the U.S. because documents provided by the U.S. government did not "fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law."

It said there was no legal basis to stop Snowden from leaving.

Fox News confirmed Saturday that the U.S. was talking with Hong Kong officials about seeking extradition for Snowden.

“Our law enforcement officials are in conversation ... with the Hong Kong authorities at this point," said Tom Donilon, the outgoing White House National Security Adviser.

The talks were reported first by CBS News. Officials there have said nothing publicly about their intentions, following the U.S. announcing Friday that it had officially filed a criminal complaint against the 26-year-old Snowden.

“If Hong Kong doesn’t act soon, it will complicate our bilateral relations and raise questions about Hong Kong’s commitment to the rule of law,” a senior administration official told Fox News late Saturday.

National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said Saturday the U.S. contacting Hong Kong authorities is based on the complaint filed June 14 and in accordance with the countries’ Agreement for the Surrender of Fugitive Offenders.

Based on Snowden’s information, The Guardian and The Washington Post earlier this month published blockbuster stories about the federal government’s far-reaching efforts to gather data on phone calls, emails and other electronic communications to thwart terrorism...........http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/06/23/obama-administration-confirms-talking-to-hong-kong-about-snowden/

    MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti)
    - Former US intelligence technician Edward Snowden is en route from Hong Kong to Moscow heading to a third destination, the French news agency AFP reported on Sunday, referring to the South China Morning Post.

“US whistleblower Edward Snowden has left Hong Kong and is on a commercial flight to Russia, but Moscow will not be his final destination,” the South China Morning Post said.

It has been previously reported that Snowden could seek political asylum in Iceland or Ecuador.

According to the newspaper, Snowden boarded Aeroflot Flight SU213, which is scheduled to land at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport at 5.15 pm local time (1.15 GMT).

Snowden, 29, who worked for US defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, hit the media spotlight in early June after he leaked to press information about an extensive surveillance program by the US government, which allegedly monitored phone and electronic conversations of millions of Americans.

  11. Snowden 'arrives at Moscow airport from Hong Kong'....

A plane believed to be carrying US intelligence fugitive Edward Snowden has arrived in Moscow from Hong Kong, from where the US was seeking his extradition on charges of espionage.

There is speculation that he might fly on to another country.

Hong Kong said Washington had failed to meet the requirements for extradition.

Mr Snowden, an intelligence contractor, fled to Hong Kong in May after revealing details of internet and phone surveillance by US intelligence.

The Aeroflot Airbus, flight SU213, landed in Moscow at 17:10 local time (13:10 GMT).

The Russia 24 TV channel has said Mr Snowden does not have a Russian visa, so will stay in the airport overnight before flying to Cuba on Monday.

Ο Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)

MOSCOW - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday Moscow had no role in former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden's efforts to evade prosecution in the United States and that he had not crossed the border into Russia.

"He chose his itinerary on his own. We learned about it ... from the media. He has not crossed the Russian border," Lavrov told a joint news conference with Algeria's foreign minister. "We consider the attempts to put blame on the Russian side ... absolutely groundless and unnacceptable."

  29. US accusations over Snowden unacceptable – Lavrov....

Washington’s allegations over US fugitive Edward Snowden are ‘unacceptable’ as he never crossed the Russian border, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said. As a consequence, any attempt to accuse or threaten Moscow by the US is unfounded.

“Russia has nothing to do with Snowden's movements, he chose his route himself and didn't cross the Russian border,” said Lavrov, responding to a question by RT’s correspondent at a press conference with the Algerian foreign minister.

According the Reuters sources at Sheremetevo airport, Snowden arrived on Sunday with a valid ticket to Havana on Monday which he did not use. He is reportedly not able to cross the Russian border because he is not in possession of a valid visa.

Lavrov’s statements follow strong US rhetoric threatening consequences if Moscow does not comply with the US extradition order against Snowden under the espionage act.

"We expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the US to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged," White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden stressed on Sunday, when Snowden reportedly arrived in Moscow.

  30. ‘Retired US general leaked details of Stuxnet virus’.....

Probe targets James ‘Hoss’ Cartwright, said to have been a key player in the cyber campaign against Iran...

WASHINGTON (AP) — A retired US general who served in the Pentagon’s upper echelon is under investigation for allegedly leaking classified information about a covert cyberattack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to media reports.

Retired Marine Gen. James “Hoss” Cartwright, a former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been told he is a target of the probe, NBC News and The Washington Post reported Thursday. A “target” is someone a prosecutor or grand jury has substantial evidence linking to a crime and who is likely to be charged.
The Justice Department referred questions to the US attorney’s office in Baltimore, where a spokeswoman, Marcia Murphy, declined to comment.

The investigation of the leak about the Iran cyberattack is one of a number of national security leak investigations that have been started by the Obama administration, including ones involving The Associated Press and Fox News.

In June 2012, The New York Times reported that Cartwright was a crucial player in the cyber operation called Olympic Games, started under President George W. Bush.

Bush reportedly advised President Barack Obama to preserve Olympic Games.

According to the Times, Obama ordered the cyberattacks sped up, and in 2010 an attack using a computer virus called Stuxnet temporarily disabled 1,000 centrifuges that the Iranians were using to enrich uranium.

Congressional leaders demanded a criminal probe into who leaked the information, and Obama said he had zero tolerance for such leaks. Republicans said senior administration officials had leaked the details to bolster the president’s national security credentials during the 2012 campaign........http://www.timesofisrael.com/retired-us-general-leaked-details-of-stuxnet-virus/

  33. Biden asks Ecuador to refuse Snowden asylum....

US vice-president relates "cordial request" not to shelter NSA whistleblower, Ecuadorean president says.

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has said the United States vice-president Joe Biden asked him not to allow whistleblower Edward Snowden asylum in a "cordial" telephone conversation.

"He communicated a very courteous request from the United States that we reject the asylum request," Correa said during his weekly television broadcast, praising Biden's good manners in contrast to the "brats" of Congress who had threatened to cut trade benefits over the Snowden issue.

Biden initiated the phone call, Correa said, and added that he promised to respect Washington's opinion in evaluating the request.

"When he [Snowden] arrives on Ecuadorean soil, if he arrives ... of course the first opinions we will seek are those of the United States," Correa said.

It is the first high-level discussion between Ecuador and the US since Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor, leaked how the spying programme Prism trawled the details of millions of private conversations a day.

Snowden has since applied for asylum in Ecuador.

    US should explain itself

The phone call came hours after Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, called on the US to tell the world why it was spying on so many people.

“The United States should be giving a clear and thorough explanation to the citizens of the world regarding this issue,” Patino said.

“Instead the entire world is focused on what happens to Edward Snowden and everyone is focused on whether or not the so-called fugitive is captured and that's not the problem."

The US has charged Snowden with espionage for leaking secret information.

The whistleblower, currently said to be in transit at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, is being assisted by the anti-secrecy organisation WikiLeaks to secure asylum in Ecuador.

Ecuador, whose embassy in London has given WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange asylum as he fights extradition to Sweden where he is wanted on sex assault charges, said earlier this week it was still “analysing” the application.

Snowden has not been seen since he arrived in Moscow from Hong Kong on Sunday, but Russian officials said he is still in transit.

"¡Qué ataque mediático estamos recibiendo a nivel mundial.

QUITO - Ecuador's President Rafael Correa on Saturday said the United States asked him not to grant asylum for former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden in a "cordial" telephone conversation he held with US Vice President Joe Biden.

Correa said he vowed to respect Washington's opinion in evaluating the request. The Andean nation says it cannot begin processing Snowden's request unless he reaches Ecuador or one of its embassies.

Snowden, who is wanted by the United States for leaking details about US communications surveillance programs, is believed to still be in the Moscow international airport after leaving Hong Kong.

  36. Secret documents show NSA spying on EU offices....

BERLIN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Security Agency ( NSA) not only monitors the communication of European citizens, but also has an eavesdropping program targeting the European Union (EU) offices, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday.

The magazine cited confidential documents it was partly able to obtain from U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden. The former CIA agent fled to Hong Kong last month and revealed a NSA-operated classified surveillance project code-named PRISM, which can trace worldwide e-mails and phone calls.

A document dated September 2010 and classified as "strictly confidential" showed how the NSA spied the EU's diplomatic mission in Washington, it said.

Eavesdropping bugs were installed in the EU buildings and the internal computer network was infiltrated, through which the American intelligence can get access to EU meetings, e-mails and internal documents, it added.

The EU representation at the United Nations in New York was also under similar surveillance, the magazine said.

In addition, the U.S. intelligence also keeps regular eavesdropping and monitoring of the Justus Lipsius building, the headquarters of the Council of the European Union, it said.

The classified phone and internet surveillance program, disclosed by The Guardian and The Washington Post, has sparked an outcry in Europe over concerns about intrusion into the privacy of individuals.

The EU has warned the Obama Administration of "grave adverse consequences" to the rights of the European citizens from the spy scheme and demanded "swift and concrete" answers.

The U.S. intelligence scandal has also stirred massive controversies in the country about the balance between privacy and national security.

  40. US taps half-billion German phone and internet activities a month – report....

US combs through half a billion of German phone calls, emails and text messages on a monthly basis and has classified its European ally on the same target level as China, a German news magazine revealed.

The NSA document leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden and published by Der Spiegel classified Germany as a “third-class” partner, on the same level as China, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, meaning that the US surveillance in Germany was stronger than in any other EU country.

"We can attack the signals of most foreign third-class partners, and we do it too," the document states.

It revealed that NSA monitors phone calls, text messages, emails and internet chat contributions and has saved the metadata (connections and not the content) at its headquarters.

NSA snooped through 20-60 million German phone connections and 10 million internet data sets a day, Der Spiegel claims.

In comparison, US tapped around 2 million connection data a day in France.

The only countries exempt from the surveillance attacks were Canada, Australia, Britain and New Zealand. ......http://rt.com/news/us-nsa-spying-germany-443/

  43. Edward Snowden has not applied for political asylum in Russia - Russian Immigration Service....

The Russian Federal Migration service (FMS) has refuted media reports which claim that NSA leaker Edward Snowden applied for political asylum in Russia.

The New York Times, citing “a Russian immigration source close to the matter," reported on Monday that former CIA employee Snowden asked Moscow for political asylum.

The unnamed source told the paper that a WikiLeaks activist traveling with Snowden handed his application to a Russian consulate in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.

Information in the foreign media which states that Snowden asked for asylum “is not true,” Zalina Kornilova, head of FMS press service, told RT.

However, Kim Shevchenko, a consul at the Sheremetyevo airport, says that Snowden did apply for asylum, Interfax reported.

According to the official, Sara Harrison [WikiLeaks activist] - who introduced herself as Snowden’s lawyer - handed him the NSA leaker’s application on Sunday evening. The diplomat said he took the file, contacted the Foreign Ministry, and gave the document to the Ministry’s courier.

This information has not been verified to RT by sources in the Russian Foreign Ministry. Consulate employees are not entitled to make any comments on behalf of the ministry.

Earlier on Monday, Putin said that Snowden could only stay in Russia if he “stops his work aimed at damaging our American partners.” The president also observed that the whistleblower does not seem intent on putting an end to the leaks.

  45. Snowden withdraws application for political asylum in Russia....

MOSCOW, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden aborted his intention to ask for political asylum in Russia, Kremlin said Tuesday.

"He withdrew his application to stay in Russia," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

On Monday, Snowden, acting via his solicitor, handed a refugee application to the Russian authorities in a Moscow airport.

He has been in the transit area of the Sheremetyevo airport for eight days after arriving here from Hong Kong.

Peskov noted that Russia would not extradite the 29-year-old whistleblower to the United States because he could face capital punishment there.

According to Peskov, Snowden asked for political asylum in 15 countries.

The Kremlin spokesman stressed that Russia could approve Snowden's application only on condition that the U.S. citizen stops his anti-U.S. activity.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow would not hand over Snowden, former U.S. National Security Agency contractor, to the United States.

  47. Bolivia will consider Snowden asylum request – President Morales....

Bolivian President Evo Morales has told RT his country would consider granting asylum to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden if a request was made. He decried the US as an “empire” with an espionage network stressing Bolivia would “shield the denounced.”

Speaking to Spanish language RT Actualidad, Evo Morales said that Snowden had not filed an asylum application to Bolivia.

“If there were a request, of course we would be willing to debate and consider the idea,” said Morales. He said that Bolivia was aware of the US spy network which repeatedly targets countries in Latin America and stressed “Bolivia was there to shield the denounced.”

“I know that the Empires have an espionage network and are against the so-called developing countries. And in particular, against those which are rich in natural resources. Bolivia, as well as Venezuela and Ecuador are exposed to constant surveillance from the U.S. Empire,” Morales told RT Actualidad.

He described the current situation concerning whistleblowers Julian Assange and Edward Snowden as “concerning.”
The Bolivian president is currently in Moscow to attend an energy and gas summit along with the President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. 49. Bolivia leader's jet diverted 'amid Snowden suspicions'....

Bolivian President Evo Morales's plane had to be diverted to Austria amid suspicion that US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden was on board, the Bolivian foreign minister has said.

Officials in both Austria and Bolivia said Mr Snowden was not on the plane.

France and Portugal reportedly refused to allow the Bolivia-bound flight to cross their airspace.

Mr Snowden is reportedly seeking asylum in Bolivia and 20 other countries to avoid extradition to the US.

Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca told reporters on Tuesday that France and Portugal had closed their airspace over the "huge lie" that Mr Snowden, 30, was on board.

"We don't know who invented this lie, but we want to denounce to the international community this injustice with the plane of President Evo Morales," he said.

......http://internacional.elpais.com/internacional/2013/07/03/actualidad/1372811536_087887.html

  52. Venezuela, Nicaragua offer asylum to Edward Snowden...

Latin American presidents grant NSA whistle-blower protection from ‘the empire’; Snowden sought refuge in more than 20 countries...

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — Presidents Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela said Friday they were willing to grant asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

Snowden has asked for asylum in numerous countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela.

“As head of state, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American Edward Snowden so that he can live (without) … persecution from the empire,” Maduro said, referring to the United States. He made the offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuela’s independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuela’s offer.

In Nicaragua, Ortega said he was willing to make the same offer “if circumstances allow it.” Ortega didn’t say what the right circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua.

He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowden’s application for asylum and that it is studying the request.

“We have the sovereign right to help a person who felt remorse after finding out how the United States was using technology to spy on the whole world, and especially its European allies,” Ortega said......http://www.timesofisrael.com/venezuela-nicaragua-offer-asylum-to-edward-snowden/

  55. Putin accuses US of 'trapping' Snowden in Russia ...

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday accused the United States of trapping US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden in Moscow, saying he would leave Russia as soon as possible.

"As soon as there's the chance to move somewhere he will certainly do this," Putin said in his first public remarks since Snowden summoned several rights activists and lawyers for a dramatic meeting Friday at state-controlled Sheremetyevo airport.

Putin accused Washington of preventing Snowden from leaving Russia after the fugitive ex-intelligence analyst arrived from Hong Kong on June 23.

"He arrived on our territory uninvited, he did not fly to us, he was flying in transit to other countries," Putin said in televised remarks.

"But as soon as he was in the air, it became known, and our American partners essentially blocked off his further flight.".....http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/International/2013/Jul-15/223771-putin-accuses-us-of-trapping-snowden-in-russia.ashx#ixzz2Z8iJOIuN

  56. Russian politicians rebuke US senator’s call to boycott Sochi Olympics...

Several Russian MPs and members of the country’s National Olympic Committee have harshly criticized the suggestion to boycott the winter games in Sochi voiced by US Senator Lindsey Graham.

The Republican Senator from South Carolina told The Hill newspaper that President Barack Obama should consider boycotting the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi if Russian authorities granted asylum to former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, a move Graham described as “outrageous”, “a breach of the rule of law” and “a slap in the face to the United States”.

Soon after the interview was published, the Russian Federal Migration Service reported on Wednesday that it had received Snowden’s request for temporary asylum and would now consider it for up to three months. But even with the whistleblower’s fate yet undecided, several Russian officials immediately reacted at the Senator’s call for boycott, saying that it was a throwback to the Cold War and absurd as it is not allowed by the rules of the Olympics.

The head of the State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, Aleksey Pushkov, said that Senator Graham’s statement was “pulling us back to the distant past, the time of mutual boycotts when our two states were looking at each other through nuclear sights”. "I am sure that these times are over and difficult periods in relations must not bring the nations to the worst times of the Cold War,” the parliamentarian added. ....http://rt.com/politics/olympics-sochi-boycott-outrage-210/

  57. Palestine welcomes EU's move to cut funds to Israeli settlements in occupied territories...

Palestine has hailed EU ban on funds to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories
RAMALLAH (AA) - Palestine has welcomed the European Union's decision to cut funds to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories in the face of Israel's persistent refusal to halt settlement construction.

The move is aimed at preventing any "grants, prizes and financial instruments funded by the EU" in the West Bank and east Jerusalem territories captured by Israel in the 1967 if Israel does not guarantee that they will not stop the settlements.

Palestine's Economy Minister Jawad al-Naji told the Anadolu Agency it was "a brave step" taken by the EU, which would help Palestine's cause to set up establish their own state.

Secretary General of Palestinian National Initiative Mustafa Barghouthi said EU's decision was a significant move in EU's relations with Palestinian people and it imposed restrictions on Israeli settlement units.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised objection to the decision saying, "we will not accept any external imposition about our borders," while an Israeli official described the decision as "an earthquake".

  58. The Washington Post: Snowden took materials on US intelligence activity against Russia, Iran, China ....

WASHINGTON, October 25 (Itar-Tass) - Former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden took tens of thousands of documents, including those related to intelligence gathering programmes against such countries as Russia, Iran and China, The Washington Post reported on Friday, referring to representatives of the U.S. government.

According to the newspaper, U.S. officials have notified foreign intelligence services of a number of states that Snowden took materials that shed light on their secret cooperation with the United States. If these documents are published, the newspaper writes, intelligence operations that along with the United States involve other countries could be at risk.

Snowden, U.S. officials said, took tens of thousands of documents, some of which contain sensitive material about collection programmes against adversaries such as Iran, Russia and China. Some refer to operations that in some cases involve countries not publicly allied with the United States. The process of informing officials in capital after capital about the risk of disclosure is delicate. In some cases, one part of the cooperating government may know about the collaboration while others — such as the foreign ministry — may not, the officials said. The documents, if disclosed, could compromise operations, officials said, according to the newspaper.

The office of the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper declined to comment.

This week, the Obama administration had to give explanations to the governments of a number of countries on the activities of the U.S. National Security Agency, which is engaged in electronic intelligence. According to recent publications, U.S. intelligence agencies were spying on political leaders in Europe, listening to their phone conversations and intercepting correspondence on the Internet. Information on various NSA programmes was disclosed to the American and British media by former NSA employee Edward Snowden who received temporary asylum in Russia.
