All the casualties so far have been confirmed in Gansu province, according to the local government.
The quake hit near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province, one of the least populated in the whole country. However, the Dingxi area has a great concentration of farms and towns. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring cities of Longnan, Tianshui, and the provincial capital city of Lanzhou.
The initial tremor happened at around 23:45 GMT (local time: 07:45:57) on Sunday and reportedly lasted for over a minute. The Chinese seismological bureau initially measured the quake at magnitude 6.6. The first tremor was followed by a series of quakes, including a magnitude-5.6.

ReplyDeleteΤουλάχιστον 11 άτομα έχασαν τη ζωή τους και 81 τραυματίστηκαν σοβαρά από τον ισχυρό επιφανειακό σεισμό των 6,6 Ρίχτερ που έπληξε το πρωί της Δευτέρας την επαρχία Γκανσού της δυτικής Κίνας, σύμφωνα με τα κρατικά ΜΜΕ.
Ωστόσο, τα διεθνή μέσα ενημέρωσης κάνουν λόγο για 20 νεκρούς και 300 τραυματίες.
Νωρίτερα, το Ινστιτούτο Γεωφυσικής των ΗΠΑ μετέδωσε ότι ο σεισμός ήταν μεγέθους 5,9 βαθμών.
Το κινεζικό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων Νέα Κίνα μετέδωσε ότι ο σεισμός έπληξε τις κομητείες Μινσιάν και Ζανγκσιάν, περίπου 170 χιλιόμετρα από την πρωτεύουσα Λανζού της επαρχίας Γκανσού στις 07:45 τοπική ώρα.
Σύμφωνα με το Νέα Κίνα μετασεισμός μεγέθους 5,6 βαθμών έπληξε την ίδια περιοχή στις 09:12 τοπική ώρα.

Çin'in resmi Şinhua ajansının haberine göre, merkez üssü eyaletin başkenti Lancou'ya yaklaşık 200 kilometre uzaklıktaki Dinşi kenti olan sarsıntıda, bölgedeki köy ve kasabalarda 270 kişinin yaralandığını duyurdu.
Gansu eyaleti 26 milyonluk nüfusuyla Çin'in en az nüfusa sahip bölgelerinden.
Bölgeye 120 kişilik arama kurtarma ekibinin sevkedildiği ancak yollardaki heyelan nedeniyle dağlık alanlara ulaşımda güçlük çekildiği belirtiliyor.
Çin'de son yılların en büyük depremi güneybatıdaki Sıçuan eyaletinde meydana gelmiş ve 7,9'luk sarsıntının ardından 90 bin kişi hayatını kaybetmiş ya da kaybolmuştu.

At least 47 people have been killed and 296 others injured after two earthquakes struck western China, local officials said.
The tremor, the first one measuring magnitude 5.9,, hit near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province, a region of mountains, desert and pastureland with a population of 26 million, early on Monday morning.
"More than 21,000 buildings were severely damaged and more than 1,200 have collapsed," an official at the earthquake bureau in Gansu told the AFP news agency.
The deaths and injuries were reported in Min County and other rural southern parts of the municipality, Dingxi Mayor Tang Xiaoming told state broadcaster CCTV.
Tang said damage was worst in the counties of Zhang and Min, where scores of homes were damaged and telephone and electricity services knocked out.
Residents described shaking windows and swinging lights. Shaking was felt in the provincial capital of Lanzhou 177km north, and as far away as Xian, 400km to the east.
"You could see the chandeliers wobble and the windows vibrating and making noise, but there aren't any cracks in the walls. ReplyDeleteΤουλάχιστον 47 άνθρωποι έχασαν τη ζωή τους και πάνω από 300 νοσηλεύονται με τραύματα ως αποτέλεσμα σεισμού στην κινεζική επαρχία Γκανσού – ανακοινώνουν οι τοπικές αρχές.
Το επίκεντρο του σεισμού των 5,9 βαθμών, ήταν κοντά στην επιφάνεια, κάτι που ενέτεινε την καταστροφικότητά του.
Ο σεισμός προκάλεσε σημαντικές καταστροφές στα προάστεια της πόλης Ντινγκζί.
'Οπως μεταδίδει τοπικός δημοσιογράφος, καταστράφηκε σχεδόν το ένα πέμπτο των κτιρίων.

The earthquake near Dingxi city had a magnitude of 5.98 and was shallow, with a depth of just 9.8 km (6 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.
Dingxi local authorities say many houses have collapsed in the quake.
In 2008, an earthquake in Sichuan province left up to 90,000 people dead and millions homeless.
At least 47 people had been killed, reports from China's national radio and Agence-France Presse news agency citing local officials said.

ReplyDeleteAl menos 47 personas han muerto y 81 están heridas tras un terremoto de 6,6 grados en la provincia noroccidental de Gansu, según informó la agencia oficial Xinhua. El seísmo se produjo a las 07.45 hora local de hoy (00.45 en España) entre los condados de Minxian y Zhangxian de la citada provincia, según datos del Centro de Control Sismológico de Gansu.
Las autoridades locales señalan que la mayoría de los municipios de la provincia se han visto afectados por el temblor y no se descarta que el número de fallecidos pueda aumentar en las próximas horas.
El hipocentro del seísmo se registró a 34,5 grados latitud norte y a 104,2 de longitud este, a unos 170 kilómetros de la capital de la provincia, Lanzhou, y a 20 kilómetros de profundidad, de acuerdo a la citada fuente.

At least 22 killed in NW China earthquake....
ReplyDeleteLANZHOU, July 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 people have been killed in an earthquake which hit a juncture region of two counties in northwest China's Gansu Province Monday morning, according to the provincial civil affairs department.
The victims include 19 in Minxian County, two in Zhangxian County in the city of Dingxi and Lixian County in the city of Longnan, according to the department.
Communication was cut off in 13 towns of Zhangxian County, it said.
The 6.6-magnitude quake happened at 7:45 a.m. at the junction of the Minxian County and Zhangxian County, the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau said.
The epicenter, with a depth of 20 km, was monitored at 34.5 degrees north latitude and 104.2 degrees east longitude, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.
Sources with the Minxian County government said most of the townships in the county have been affected by the quake. The townships of Meichuan and Puma were seriously hit.
Many homes in the quake-hit region collapsed, according to the civil affairs bureau of the Dingxi City.
Locals in Minxian County said a strong tremor was felt and they saw trees and homes shake, adding that the quake lasted for about one minute.

ReplyDeleteRescuers with shovels and sniffer dogs combed through collapsed hillsides on Tuesday as the death toll rose to 89 from a strong earthquake in a farming region of northwest China.
State broadcaster CCTV showed on Tuesday images of soldiers digging through earth and sand to reach modest houses buried under landslides in the northwestern province of Gansu.
Seriously injured patients wrapped in blankets were put into helicopters heading to the provincial capital Lanzhou, which has the nearest major hospital.
The twin earthquakes that struck on Monday morning had magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.6 according to the US Geological Survey, but were only six miles deep, so that much of the energy released was transmitted to the surface, where it wreaked havoc.
China's official Xinhua news agency said initial investigations showed at least 5,785 houses had collapsed and another 73,000 were severely damaged even as the overnight body count stood at 89.
On Monday the government of the city of Dingxi, the worst-affected area, said more than 27,000 people were left homeless.
Xinhua said about 3,000 police and rescue personnel have been sent to the quake-hit region, though landslides and flooding have hampered their efforts, and officials said they were concerned more rain could exacerbate the need for shelter.
Stunning experience
Many residents in Dingxi town centre felt the main tremor despite the epicentre being some 185 kms away.
"I was on the second floor of our building, but it felt very powerful," said Xia, the manager of the six-storey Haitian hotel.
"Many people staying on the higher floors ran out of their rooms, looking rather stunned," she told AFP news agency.
Heavy clouds had gathered over the quake region early Tuesday, as farmers in the largely rural area tended their goats on the mountainsides.
Officials fear any storms could hamper the rescue efforts, bringing with them the threat of further landslides.
Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6 quake earlier in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700, China's worst quake in three years. That quake had hit close to where a devastating 7.9 temblor killed some 70,000 people in May 2008.

Πάνω από 1.000 άνθρωποι τραυματίστηκαν και 230.000 πολίτες χρειάστηκε να απομακρυνθούν από τις εστίες τους εξαιτίας του σεισμού που σημειώθηκε νωρίς την Δευτέρα.
Εκατοντάδες στρατιώτες, άνδρες της παραστρατιωτικής αστυνομίας και πολίτες συμμετέχουν στις σωστικές προσπάθειες, που όμως δυσχεραίνουν οι βροχοπτώσεις στην περιοχή, οι συνεχιζόμενες μετασεισμικές δονήσεις και το γεγονός ότι έχουν κλείσει δρόμοι από κατολισθήσεις, μετέδωσαν κινεζικά ΜΜΕ.

Τα περισσότερα από τα εκατοντάδες οικήματα που κατέρρευσαν ήταν πλινθόκτιστα και δεν ήταν ικανά να αντέξουν έναν ισχυρό σεισμό, φέρεται να δήλωσε σήμερα ο Ουάνγκ Λανμίν, επικεφαλής της σεισμολογικής υπηρεσίας στην επαρχία. «Πρέπει να εφαρμοσθούν πολιτικές τέτοιες, ώστε να βελτιωθεί η δυνατότητα των κατοίκων των επαρχιών να αντεπεξέρχονται σε ισχυρούς σεισμούς, όπως η αύξηση των κρατικών ενισχύσεων και των πιστώσεων για την ανέγερση κατοικιών στην επαρχία», ανέφερε ο Ουάνγκ.
Ο σεισμός ήταν μεγέθους 6,6 βαθμών σύμφωνα με την κεντρική σεισμολογική υπηρεσία της Κίνας. Το γεωλογικό ινστιτούτο των ΗΠΑ (USGS) ανέφερε ότι ήταν μεγέθους 5,9 βαθμών. Το επίκεντρό του βρισκόταν περίπου 180 χλμ. νοτιοανατολικά της επαρχιακής πρωτεύουσας Λανζιού, ή περίπου 1.200 χλμ. δυτικά του Πεκίνου.
