Political turmoil has already forced Lisbon to request a delay in the eighth review of the bailout by its creditors, which was initially due to start last Monday, until the end of August or early September.
The 78 billion euro ($102.5 billion) bailout programme and attached austerity policies are associated with the worst recession in Portugal since the 1970s.
Antonio Jose Seguro, the leader of the main opposition Socialist party, said on Friday that the ruling coalition had rejected most of his party's proposals aimed to renegotiate the terms of the bailout.
The crisis, which started as an internal political rift in the ruling coalition and expanded to a debate over the bailout plan, has threatened to derail Portugal's planned exit from the bailout and full return to debt markets in mid-2014.
The government says abandoning austerity would undermine Lisbon's credibility with lenders and investors.
"There were two different visions to exit the crisis. That being clear, it made no sense to continue negotiating for the sake of negotiating," Seguro told reporters after meeting President Anibal Cavaco Silva.
Seguro said the issue of whether to go ahead with 4.7 billion euro ($6.2 billion) in proposed government budget cuts had been a major sticking point.
Analysts say the situation is very uncertain but the president could still avoid an escalation of the crisis by keeping the ruling coalition in place rather than using his power to dissolve parliament and call a snap election.

La reforma del Estado que la troika pide a Portugal para que ahorre 4.700 millones de euros fue el escollo insalvable que hizo naufragar las negociaciones entre conservadores y socialistas para sellar un pacto de salvación nacional.
Los documentos divulgados sobre el desarrollo de las conversaciones entre el gobernante Partido Social Demócrata (PSD, centro derecha) y el principal de la oposición, el socialista (PS), revelan el abismo de sus posiciones ante esa reforma, que supone un refuerzo de las medidas de austeridad aplicadas desde hace dos años.
La reforma de la discordia ya está en preparación por parte del Ejecutivo luso, que planea aplicarla entre este año y el próximo, e incluye la reducción del número de funcionarios y cambios en el sistema de pensiones, como medidas de mayor impacto económico.
Para la coalición conservadora en el Gobierno, el "compromiso de salvación nacional" pedido por el jefe de Estado, Anibal Cavaco Silva, debía garantizar el apoyo de los socialistas en el Parlamento a esos recortes, aunque no se profundizaba en sus detalles y quedaban abiertos a una negociación.
Pero los socialistas exigieron, según el texto de sus propuestas, "parar las políticas de austeridad", entre ellas los ahorros de 4.700 millones de euros "acordados entre el Gobierno y la troika". Die größte portugiesische Oppositionspartei hat von Staatspräsident Anibal Cavaco Silva angeregte Gespräche zur Lösung der Regierungskrise verlassen. Es wurde keine Vereinbarung erzielt, wie der Chef der oppositionellen Sozialisten, Antonio Jose Seguro, mitteilte. Seguro sagte nach Gesprächen am Freitagabend: "Es gab zwei Ansichten, wie die Krise beendet werden kann. Es war sinnlos, weiterzuverhandeln."
In seiner "Rede an die Nation" sagte Seguro, der Präsident sei nun am Zug. Cavaco Silva müsse den von der Koalition erreichten Kompromiss akzeptieren oder eine vorgezogene Neuwahl ansetzen. Seguros Kompromiss sieht eine Beförderung des zurückgetretenen konservativen Außenministers Paulo Portas zum stellvertretenden Ministerpräsidenten vor. The crisis threatened to derail Lisbon's planned exit from the EU/IMF bailout.

Presidente da República afastou hipótese de eleições antecipadas e anunciou uma moção de confiança ao Governo no Parlamento.
O Presidente da República disse, este domingo, que, não tendo sido possível um compromisso de salvação nacional, a melhor alternativa é a continuação em funções do Governo "com garantias reforçadas de coesão e solidez da coligação partidária até ao final da legislatura".
"Na minha Comunicação ao País, apresentei, com toda a clareza, as razões pelas quais considero que, no atual contexto de emergência nacional, a convocação de eleições antecipadas não constitui uma solução para os problemas que Portugal enfrenta", afirmou, numa comunicação ao país, a partir do Palácio de Belém.
"Assim, não tendo sido possível alcançar um Compromisso de Salvação Nacional, considero que a melhor solução alternativa é a continuação em funções do actual Governo, com garantias reforçadas de coesão e solidez da coligação partidária até ao final da legislatura", disse.
Moção de confiança
O Presidente da República anunciou que o Governo PSD-CDS vai apresentar uma moção de confiança no Parlamento.

Portugals Präsident Anibal Cavaco Silva hat in einer TV-Ansprache der konservativen Regierung des Euro-Schuldenlandes auch nach dem Scheitern der Krisengespräche mit der linken Opposition sein Vertrauen ausgesprochen. "Die beste alternative Lösung ist die Fortsetzung der aktuellen Regierung", sagte Cavaco am Sonntagabend in Lissabon. Damit ignorierte das Staatsoberhaupt erneut die Forderung der Opposition nach einer sofortigen Absetzung der Regierung von Pedro Passos Coelho und der Ausrufung von Neuwahlen.
Der Präsident kann die aktuelle Regierungskoalition im Amt lassen oder das Parlament auflösen und Neuwahlen ansetzen. Er hatte vor seiner TV-Ansprache bislang keine Signale gegeben, welche Lösung er bevorzuge.
"Nationale Rettung"
Cavaco Silva hatte die Parteien in der vorigen Woche zu einer Übereinkunft aufgefordert. Damit sollte eine Krise in der Koalition aus Sozialdemokraten und der rechtsgerichteten Partei CDS-PP beigelegt werden, die den Sparkurs des südeuropäischen Landes gefährdet. Doch die Regierungsparteien konnten keine Verständigung mit den oppositionellen Sozialisten über einen Pakt der "nationalen Rettung" erzielen. Diese fordern wegen der schweren Rezession ein Ende der Austeritätspolitik und wollen mit den Kreditgebern neu über die Bedingungen des 78 Milliarden Euro schweren Rettungspaktes von EU und Internationalem Währungsfonds (IWF) verhandeln.
