China's aircraft carrier leaves for sea trials (video CCTV)

China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, has left its homeport in east China’s Qingdao city for a training mission in the South China Sea.

This is the first time the carrier has conducted a cross-sea training voyage. According to the navy, the scheduled training session is aimed at testing the carrier’s equipment.

The aircraft carrier was escorted by two missile destroyers, the Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, the Yantai and Weifang. The Liaoning was commissioned into the Navy last year.

Previous training missions have included landing and take-off drills by J-15 carrier-borne fighter jets.

  1. China aircraft carrier in disputed waters will raise tension, Philippines say...

MANILA — The Philippines said today (Nov 27) the imminent arrival of China’s sole aircraft carrier in the disputed South China Sea for the first time for a training mission would raise tension.

The carrier Liaoning left port from the northern city of Qingdao accompanied by two destroyers and two frigates yesterday. While in the South China Sea, it will carry out tests and drills, according to China’s military.

China says the mission is routine.

China claims almost the entire oil- and gas-rich South China Sea, rejecting the rival claims to parts of it from Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Philippine Foreign Affairs Department spokesman Raul Hernandez said the carrier’s arrival was a worrying development that contravened agreements with China on managing tension in the South China Sea.

“Its deployment raises tension and violates the Declaration of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea,” he said.

“Its deployment must not be violative of international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” Mr Hernandez added.

China and the Philippines have accused each other of violating the code of conduct, a non-binding confidence-building agreement on maritime conduct signed by China and ASEAN in 2002.

The dispute over the sea is one of the region’s biggest flashpoints and underlines the significance of China’s military build-up and the United States strategic “pivot” back to Asia.

The Philippines, a US ally, has angered China by launching an arbitration case with the United Nations to challenge the legal validity of China’s claim.

Though considered decades behind US technology, the Liaoning represents the Chinese navy’s blue-water ambitions and has been the focus of a campaign to stir patriotism.

  3. China building second aircraft carrier: Report....

BEIJING: China has started constructing the second of four planned aircraft carriers, a top government official said according to media reports on Saturday.

The ship is under construction in the northeastern port of Dalian and will take six years to build, the reports said quoting Wang Min, Communist Party chief for Dalian's Liaoning province.

The country's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, was completed in September 2012 in a symbolic milestone for the country's increasingly muscular military.

Another two are in the pipeline, according to Wang, in a projection of power that could be seen as contradicting Beijing's long-stated policy of arming itself strictly for self-defence.

When the Liaoning went into service, Beijing and Tokyo were locked in a territorial row over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus.

The row continues to simmer, along with other sovereignty disputes with the Philippines and Vietnam.

Early this month a Japanese newspaper said China was overhauling its military structure in order to strengthen its attack capability and secure air and naval superiority in the South China and East China seas.

The Liaoning carrier conducted its maiden mission in the South China Sea in January.

It followed an incident in December in which a US warship was forced to avoid a collision with a Chinese naval vessel, prompting Washington to accuse China of being the aggressor.
