The Syrian foreign ministry said Kerry's repeated statements “threaten to cause the failure of the Geneva conference, are a flagrant violation of Syrian affairs and an aggression against the Syrian people's right to decide their future”.
Despite differing over "tactics" on Syria's civil war, the US and its allies desire the goal of a handover of power by Syrian President Bashar Assad, the report cited Kerry as saying in Cairo on Sunday.

ReplyDeleteΟ επικεφαλής του Συριακού Εθνικού Συνασπισμού Άχμαντ Τζάρμπα δήλωσε σήμερα ότι η συριακή αντιπολίτευση δεν θα μετάσχει στις προτεινόμενες ειρηνευτικές συνομιλίες για την Συρία στην Γενεύη, που είναι γνωστές ως "Γενεύη 2", αν δεν υπάρξει ένα σαφές χρονοδιάγραμμα για την αποχώρηση από την εξουσία του Σύρου προέδρου Μπασάρ αλ Άσαντ.
"Αποφασίσαμε να μην μετάσχουμε στις συνομιλίες της Γενεύης, εκτός κι αν αυτό γίνει με αξιοπρέπεια και εκτός κι αν υπάρξει μια επιτυχής μεταβίβαση της εξουσίας με ένα συγκεκριμένο χρονοδιάγραμμα και χωρίς το Ιράν (...) στο τραπέζι των διαπραγματεύσεων", δήλωσε ο Τζάρμπα σε έκτακτη συνεδρίαση του Αραβικού Συνδέσμου που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Κάιρο.
Τα σχόλια αυτά του Τζάρμπα προκαλούν ακόμη μεγαλύτερη σύγχυση όσον αφορά τις προτεινόμενες ειρηνευτικές συνομιλίες για την Συρία. Ο απεσταλμένος του ΟΗΕ για την Συρία έχει πει ότι δεν θα υπάρξουν προϋποθέσεις για τις ειρηνευτικές αυτές συνομιλίες, οι οποίες έχουν καθυστερήσει καιρό.
Οι συνομιλίες αυτές αποσκοπούν στο να φέρουν στο τραπέζι των διαπραγματεύσεων τις εμπόλεμες πλευρές στην Συρία, αλλά έχουν καθυστερήσει πάρα πολλές φορές λόγω των διαφωνιών μεταξύ των παγκόσμιων δυνάμεων, των διαιρέσεων μεταξύ της αντιπολίτευσης και των αδιάλλακτων θέσεων του Άσαντ και των ανταρτών.
Δυτικοί και Άραβες αξιωματούχοι δήλωσαν αυτήν την εβδομάδα ότι οι διεθνείς δυνάμεις είναι απίθανο να επιτύχουν τον στόχο τους για την πραγματοποίηση της διάσκεψης αυτής στη Γενεύη τον Νοέμβριο.

The United States and Saudi Arabia agreed on Monday that there should be “no role” for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in any transitional period.
“There are no differences with Saudi Arabia about objective in Syria,” said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during a joint press conference with his Saudi counterpart in Riyadh.
“Assad has lost all legitimacy, and he must go,” added Kerry, who described ties with Riyadh as “strategic” and “enduring.”
Washington “appreciates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to peace in Syria, but the crisis will not end through military force,” said Kerry.
While he said Washington would continue to support the Syrian opposition, he warned that “violent extremists” in the country are growing in strength and must be stopped.
He said, however, that the United States “won’t stand idly,” but did not elaborate.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said differences between his country and Washington “were mostly on tactics” rather than on “goals.”
“[U.S.-Saudi] relations have always been based on independence and respect and based on serving mutual interests,” Reuters quoted Prince Saud as saying.
“Difference is a normal matter and we seek to mend it through communication between the two nations,” he added.
Referring to Syria, the minister said negotiations are important but talks should not go on “indefinitely.”
“But we, at the same time, realize that negotiations should not go on indefinitely, especially that tremendous tasks are ahead of us and they need decisive intervention.”
He added: “The international community has failed in stopping deadly violence in Syria,”
He also said the United Nations dismantling chemical weapons sites in Syria did not stop deadly violence in the country.
