Μετά το τέλος της διήμερης επίσκεψης στο Κίεβο, όπου συνάντησε δύο φορές τον Ουκρανό Πρόεδρο Viktor Yanukovich, η Ashton έκανε έκκληση για διάλογο μεταξύ της κυβέρνησης και της αντιπολίτευσης, δείχνοντας ξεκάθαρα ότι η ΕΕ εγκαταλείπει την «ουδέτερη» στάση της.
«Περισσότερο από οτιδήποτε άλλο, το μήνυμα που έδωσα αυτές τις μέρες είναι η σημασία του διαλόγου και η σημασία του να ακούς αυτό που λέει ο λαός. Θεωρώ πως ο λαός αυτής της υπέροχης χώρας αξίζει καλύτερα», είπε η Βρετανίδα.
Η Ashton εμφανίστηκε σοκαρισμένη από τις επιδρομές και την καταστολή της αστυνομίας εναντίον των διαδηλωτών που έχουν συγκεντρωθεί στην πλατεία Maidan στο Κίεβο, διαμαρτυρόμενοι για την απόφαση της κυβέρνησης να κάνει γεωπολιτική στροφή προς τη Μόσχα.
Η επιχείρηση καταστολής πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τρίτη το βράδυ, μόλις λίγες ώρες μετά την επίσκεψη της Ashton στην πλατεία, όπου σύμφωνα με μάρτυρες έτυχε υποδοχής «ροκ σταρ».
Η Ashton συνάντησε τον Yanukovich για δεύτερη φορά χθες, ενώ οι διαμαρτυρόμενοι επέστρεψαν στην πλατεία, αψηφώντας την αστυνομία και τις ειδικές δυνάμεις.
Μετά τις συναντήσεις του με την Ashton και την Αμερικανίδα υφυπουργό Victoria Nuland, ο Yanukovich ζήτησε από τους αντιπάλους του να τον συναντήσουν προκειμένου να διαπραγματευθούν έναν τρόπο για την λύση του αδειξόδου.
«Προσκαλώ τους εκπροσώπους όλων των πολιτικών κομμάτων, ιερείς, αντιπροσώπους της κοινωνίας των πολιτών σε εθνική συζήτηση», είπε σε δήλωση, στην οποία κάλεσε παράλληλα την αντιπολίτευση να μην κατέβει εκ νέου στους δρόμους.
Η Ashton ήγειρε το ζήτημα της «εθνικής συζήτησης» στην τελευταία δήλωσή της πριν φύγει από το Κίεβο.
«Λέω ξεκάθαρα ότι εάν έχεις συζήτηση στρογγυλής τραπέζης θα πρέπει να τους συμπεριλάβεις όλους: πρέπει να είναι στο υψηλότερο επίπεδο και νομίζω θα πρέπει να είναι με σαφείς στόχους», τόνισε.
Η ΕΕ διατηρεί τη θέση της ότι η πόρτα παραμένει ανοιχτή για την Ουκρανία να υπογράψει τη Συμφωνία Σύνδεσης με τις Βρυξέλλες, με την προϋπόθεση να ενταχθεί η αντιπολίτευση στις συζητήσεις, να απελευθερωθούν οι συλληφθέντες διαδηλωτές και να διερευνηθούν οι περιπτώσεις βίας.
Ο καλός και ο κακός «μπάτσος»
Η γλώσσα του σώματος στα τηλεοπτικά βίντεο των ξεχωριστών συναντήσεων των Ashton και Nuland με τον Yanukovich, έδειξαν ότι ο αμερικανικός τόνος ήταν πιο ψυχρός.
- Ωστόσο οι Βρυξέλλες είναι πιθανό να υιοθετήσουν παρόμοιο τόνο εάν ο Yanukovich δεν υλοποιήσει την υπόσχεσή του να ελευθερώσει τους συλληφθέντες, να ερευνήσει τα περιστατικά βίας και να ξεκινήσει ουσιώδη διάλογο για να βγει η χώρα από την πολιτική κρίση.
«Συμπεριλαμβάνονται και οι κυρώσεις αλλά δε θα δώσω παραπάνω λεπτομέρειες», είπε.
- Ο Yanukovich και η οικογένειά του διαθέτει μια τεράστια περιουσία, και η Δύση γνωρίζει ακριβώς πώς να πλήξει τα προσωπικά του συμφέροντα μέσω στοχευμένων κυρώσεων.

Ukrainian PM complains over natural gas agreements with Russia...

Agreement on the purchases of Russian natural gas, which the national company Naftogaz Ukrainy and Russia's OAO Gazprom signed in 2009, are highly disadvantageous for Kiev and are depleting the country's foreign exchange/gold reserves, Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said Friday at a roundtable conference on a withdtrawal from the political crisis.
"The gas agreement has brought about a huge loss of the nation's monetary reserves and it devours our currency reserves every month," he said.
He recalled that the Ukrainian government is effectuating measures to cut down the consumption of gas from Russia, adding that in 2013 this country was going to slash it by almos 40% versus 2010 -- to 26 billion cubic meters from 37 billion cubic meters.

The upcoming sixth meeting of the Russia-Ukraine interstate commission, which will be chaired by the two presidents, demonstrates not only Russia’s responsible attitude towards the cooperation with Ukraine, but also the importance of the bilateral relations for settling Ukraine’s domestic political situation, Russia’s Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov said in an interview with Itar-Tass on Saturday.
“Though Ukraine’s current economic situation has been discussed in various formats and not only at the initiative of Ukraine, it is not a key item on the domestic political agenda now,” he said. “Where officials of the government’s economic block speak about the hryvnias rate or about the fleeing capital, this is exactly the reason, which may not only aggravate the local protests if the situation is destabilised, but also may affect the timing fo the inner political compromise.”
The number of the documents, which the meeting participants will discuss - memorandums, intergovernmental agreements, roadmaps - is “rather high,” the ambassador said. “They cover a wide range - cooperation in high technologies, the energy sphere, improvement of the mutual trade and elimination of mutual customs barriers. We expect the countries will sign a non-typical agreement on modern infrastructure projects. Several documents will be devoted to the humanitarian sphere.”
Zurabov stressed there were agreements on several issues, “work on which still continues, but decisions have been delayed.” “They will make a true input in stabilisation of the inner political situation in Ukraine, which Russia considers a realistic demonstration of true neighbourhood.”
While speaking about the chances Ukraine may sign an association agreement with the European Union, the ambassador said “it is necessary to realise the reasons, why the Ukrainian side suspended preparations for signing the agreement with the EU on a free trade zone and on the association.” He believes, reiterating the regime of preparing for signing the agreements “could be full-fledged, if the work being done could result in minding comprehensively the concerns, which the Ukrainian side expressed regarding possible consequences from affected economic relations with the Customs Union.”
“Sure, we cannot rule out during the negotiations not all problems may be settled,” Zurabov added. “This is why Ukraine announced its claims for receiving economic support from the EU, which could compensate for expected losses incurred from changed structure of the trade turnover with the Customs Union’s countries.” The ambassador added Brussels, realising the existing problems, “does not hurry to get engaged in possible amounts of the assistance.
